I'm re-looking at the cooling system. I'm going to eliminate the liquid cooling, and see what I can wrangle with the numbers.

Since SSD's were a hot topic in this thread, I'll throw this into the pile.

Review of new Crucial m4 SSD's (at 64, 128, 256, And 512 GB)

Could someone explain the merits of more RAM vs faster RAM and how much to I really need? I'm really tempted to go for 24 GB now, just to have plenty in case of future memory requirement inflation, but on the other hand I could probably just go for 12 GB now and pop in another 12 GB later if I need it. I'm also not clear on why it takes twice as many chips to get 12 GB of 1800+ MHz RAM as the slower, and whether faster would be better than more or not.

I've been having a great time playing with the configurators DS linked, in any case. It's fun seeing how much I can cram into any given amount of money.

You need enough that you never have to page or swap. Mostly, these days, if you're not running graphics programs or some power app of one kind or another, just get 8Gb of RAM and call it good.

Faster ram is pretty useless if you have too little and you have to page or swap, since that'll require the use of your hard drive.

Given equal amounts of RAM, and given you aren't running low, faster RAM can be noticeable, but most general purpose apps aren't that memory intensive that you'll be able to tell.
