When something happens that is in no way, shape or form, your fault, step up and take the blame anyway. Dang it Honey, I should have taken the day off and taken you over to visit your mother so you wouldn't have been alone when you walked in and found her dead of a heart attack in the middle of her front room.

This is one of the worst pieces of advice I have ever seen someone give someone else.

Sometimes, people just want someone to offer to be responsible for bad **** happening so they don't have to blame themselves. It doesn't cost a dime, it's non-fattening, and won't contribute to global warming. Given time, they'll know it wasn't your fault and they'll appreciate the support.

Back on topic, my number one rule is, women turn into their mothers. Check out mom, if you don't think you could stand being around them for any length of time, bail.

Oh dear god, I hope that is not true. I would hate to turn into my mom.

Unfortunately, it's been my experience that young women who are most determined not to turn into their mothers are some of the closest matches in later years.

I do have a rather small sample set for this rule, but it has served me well.

It's true. I find myself becoming more and more like my late mother every day. Except when I love people, I tell them. And I give hugs and kisses. And I tell people I'm proud of them when they've done something right. And I don't force feed my family tofu, bean sprouts, and liberal ideology. And when I'm wrong, I admit it and say I'm sorry. And I don't have a Masters Degree and I didn't marry a doctor.
But other than that, I'm just like her. ;-)

I caught myself the other day, acting just like my mother did. I stoped... smacked myself mentally, then tried to fix it >.<

Then this does not apply since I am not a young woman. :P

My father's biggest gripe about that bit of advice was that nobody ever tells you that some women turn out like their fathers.

You should be good then.

A woman's developmental years are her 20's. She becomes who she is by 30 or so.

Her 30's are fairly stable, then she has to deal with menopause and her empty nest at about the same time, which causes another crisis of self, and another possible major change of personality.

I figure I can breathe easy in a year or five, when my wife reaches 50.

This has been my experience, take it for what it's worth.
