Sometimes, people just want someone to offer to be responsible for bad **** happening so they don't have to blame themselves. It doesn't cost a dime, it's non-fattening, and won't contribute to global warming. Given time, they'll know it wasn't your fault and they'll appreciate the support.
Back on topic, my number one rule is, women turn into their mothers. Check out mom, if you don't think you could stand being around them for any length of time, bail.
