...starts sea trials..

This should be fun...

AP News Via Yahoo News wrote:
BEIJING (AP) — A Chinese state news agency says sea trials have started for the country's first aircraft carrier.
Xinhua News Agency says the carrier left Dalian port in northeast Liaoning province on Wednesday morning. The test run had been anticipated.
Citing unnamed military sources, Xinhua says the sea trial was in line with the schedule to rebuild the carrier.
China officially acknowledged two weeks ago that it is rebuilding the carrier it bought more than a decade ago. It says the refurbished ship will be used only for research and training.
Xinhua says refitting and test work will continue on the carrier when it returns from its sea trial.

I guess when we see a carrier silhouette off the long beach pier, you we might actually have to wonder what flag it's flying...

Cool. Maybe they could use it to rescue us when everyone is unemployed and rioting.

Also I don't understand the negativity about this? It's not an us versus them situation. Is it because you think they should have the right to vote and elect people like our Congress and Obama? Historically it's always been us messing with them, not the other way around.

You don't consider China a military threat ?

Aircraft carriers make your Air Force portable.

This is a fairly significant consideration when planning to defend your country (or 'interests')

I find it ironic, that one of the few things in this world not made in China is china's aircraft carrier.

(Okay, I exaggerate.)

Taiwan resonds by developing anti-carrier missles...

Taiwan's 'Carrier Killer' Aims To Sink China's Carrier

Quote:
TAIPEI - In the event of war, Taiwan plans to sink China's new aircraft carrier, the Varyag, with its new "aircraft carrier killer" missile, the ramjet-powered supersonic anti-ship cruise missile Hsiung Feng 3. The revelation was made Aug. 10 on the same day China launched the Varyag for its first sea trials.

Yeah, I'm more worried about them using it to mess with Taiwan or merchant shipping than being a match for one of our carrier groups.

Messing with Taiwan would get them to messing with one or more of our 11 carrier groups.

I'm not worried about Chinese aircraft carriers off our coasts anyone soon. China's got a ways to go before they are ready to do the Great Red Fleet tour of the world. But I know that they do have a long-term goal to get there.

It's not a threat in a sense of "ZOMG China might get an aircraft carrier!" It's been coming for a long time. In fact, the only reason it didn't happen sooner is that China is traditionally a land power and their institutional and cultural priorities don't emphasize sea power as much as ours do.

However, it does illustrate that other countries wish to be able to affect international trade and sea communication through naval power, and we need to bear that in mind.

Lex, of course, displays his usual complete ignorance. "We" didn't mess with China much at all in the past; that's been Japan and others. They were a major ally in World War II. Even after they went Communist, we probably would have done nothing more hostile that blow hot air had they not stuck their nose into the Korean War for no reason other than feeling entitled to a buffer state between South Korea and China, even if that buffer state was run by an inept hyperagressive madman. Granted, MacArthur's rhetoric didn't help much, but he was one old man, no matter his stature or position.

China will just wait till we default, then accept China, Alaska, and the west coast as assets in lieu of payment.

Realistically, we are the last country China will want to attack unprovoked. We will probably be able to beat them. Russia, well things would get real nasty. SE Asia and the middle east, possible, but the real targets are India and Australia.

I'd like to believe this. However we are now a debtor nation that makes the Dali Llama leave through the back door of the White House, for fear of annoying our Great Debt Holder. Thus, I'm not so sure the current administration would share our view.

The real risk to us is not direct Chinese attack (at least, not as it stands now) but rather that they could be in a position to dictate trade relationships to us.

If we allowed our ability to defend ourselves to deteriorate, the Mariana islands, Guam, Wake Island, Midway Island and possibly Hawaii and Alaska could conceiveably be at risk. All of these people are U.S. citizens.

Major powers don't fight directly so much any more. Proxy wars in small shitty countries are more popular.

Being a "debtor nation" is pretty irrelevant. As I've pointed out before, using a nation's debt as a weapon to atack it's vital interests is a hostile act in and of itself. In fact, doing to could give us an avenue to relieve a lot of debt, especially if it was in conjunction with military action. We could default only on bonds held by China, meanwhile pointing out their unfriendly actions in holding that debt and their aggressive moves elsewhere to everyone else.
