The Glade 4.0

Ok, there's this huge hole in the wall above the mantel that was built for an old-school 32-inch crt TV when they built the house. Our flat screen TV won't fit in there, and we're not going to go out and buy a small flat screen to stick up there, especially since now we have things like Ps3s and Dish Network boxes and things that need to be easily accessible and not 8 feet up in a 2 and a half foot recess in the wall.
The mantel is not wide enough to put the flat screen on, and we'd still run into the problem of where to put the aforementioned accessories, so the TV is on the entertainment stand in front of the fireplace.

So what the heck do I do with this huge hole in the wall with doors??

Remove the doors and hinges. Cut a piece of drywall to fit the hole, cut four sections of 2x4, as deep as the recess minus the depth of the drywall. Brace beams to the corners of the recess (or thereabouts) with L brackets, so the beams are facing outwards and are set flush against the corners of the recess. Insert drywall into hole, nail through the drywall into the ends of the beams (use something with a flat head). Spackle around the seam. Sand. Paint.

Yes, just cut a piece of drywall, secure it in, and putty over it.

Oh, but leave the box there, inside the wall, and put something interesting in there. Someone will eventually find it. I do this with all my renovations.

Putting a TV in a place like that is a pretty bad idea in general. The hole retains heat.

remove the doors and hinges, buy some nice decorative (and likely fake) plants and use it for some sort of display.

Shadow box with a resin skull in it and tell people it was the last person who did not put the toilet seat down...

You know, something along this lines is worth considering. It could be great storage space. You don't have to put a safe in there, but you could remove the cabinet doors and engineer some sort of artwork or painting as a cover for that area.











Then, fill it with canned peaches.

And ammo.

This idea isn't as good as sharks with frikkin' laser beams, but why don't you just take off the doors and hinges and mount your TV in front of it? Raise it up just enough so you can put your cable box and DVD player in the recess underneath the TV.

I'm not so sure I like the idea of having a TV mounted on the wall...one, I wouldn't know how to mount it, and two, mounted TVs make me nervous with small children around....I'm terrified that it would fall off and hurt someone.

Hrm, I assume your TV is a flat screen LCD or similar? There are lots of very sturdy, safe wall mounts available for them. Just make sure you mount them to studs in the wall.

In fact, large flat screens sitting on tables or TV stands can actually be pretty dangerous because they can be somewhat top heavy, and can be pulled over onto a child or pet.

Here is a typical example...

I don't think mounting thousand dollar electronic devices to the wall would have become as popular as it has if there was a high chance they'd fall. In fact, as Midgen points out, they're more structurally sound than simply putting it on a TV stand.

Hrmmm...this may take some looking into. We'd definitely need to have some sort of structure built inside the hole because there is no way to mount the TV as is...the TV is approximately only two inches wider than the recess and there is nothing inside that I could mount anything to.

What you need (and I know this, because this is what I did with my TV nook) is the "SlydLock Fireplace Nook Mount" from http://www.carolinacustomsound.com/. Installation took me less than an hour. As far as my web searching skill went, I couldn't find a competing product.
