The Glade 4.0

So I love Halloween and I have always wanted to do a big display in the yard, this year I have some time to work on it so I am getting started early. I am building columns and a cemetery fence for the front. Will make some tombstones for a small graveyard and a coffin coming out of the ground.

Also going to try to make some pumpkins that I found on line and some large spiders all out of papermache, they look really good now we will see if I can replicate them.

I'm going to hang black sheets in the garage with black lights for beggars night, I also need to make a chiller for my fog machine so the fog stays closer to the ground.

I have lots of other ideas too but since I am getting a late start I will tone it down some and add to it for next year.

Anyone else ever do a big display or have interesting ideas? I found this site http://www.halloweenmonsterlist.info/ which has a ton of good ideas and instructions. Some of them I am attempting to do and will add others as I go.

Yes it is still august but some of the things are going to take some time to make.

Good timing! Was just thinking lately that I also need to get started. There are two lage "Halloween Club" stores next to the 5 freeway here in LA, and I've been thinking I need to stop in and start getting ready.

Sounds like you're gonna outdo me, but here's what I came up with last year in a weekend.

I had a fog machine, but it crapped out after one night of testing. I ended up using about $40 worth of dry ice, and was rather happy with the effect, actually.

Since we just moved, we're now in an area at mint have kids coming by... And enough of a front yard to do something with. Woohoo!

I always liked dressing up like a manequinn with a bowl of candy in my lap.... And then coming alive when they reached in to take some. Works very well if you turn the lights out like you're not home.

Not bad for a weekend set up Aethien. My intent is to grow this over the next several years, kind of like people do with the Christmas decorations, but with Halloween. The nice thing is the weather is much more conducive to putting up and taking down the decorations than in December and January. I will post some pictures as I get things made.

I'm thinking the same thing - start collecting stuff every year, and eventually become known as "the house that decorates and puts on a spooky show for Hallowe'en" on our street. I had a mad fantasy at one point that I could do a whole haunted house kind of thing in our back yard and send people through, that will probably have to wait until I retire.

I like the mannequin idea, NephyrS. I did scare the bejesus out of some kids by standing there motionless until I heard them say, "It's just a statue." Hehehehe.

Many years ago my wife enjoyed putting on an ugly witch outfit, sitting very still on the rocker on the porch and waiting for the trick or treaters. She had a cauldron full of goodies with her, and a foot pedal to trigger the spooky sounds. More than one little kid ran screaming away and had to be brought back to get their treats. The parents were always amused, none of them ever got mad at her. The kids, well, that may be a different story.

Hop the fence cost about $5 for a 6 foot section it is just 1 x 2 with holes drilled through it, the vertical posts are 1/2 inch pvc and the finials on top I ordered for .37 each. The posts are glued in place with plumbers glue, then I painted it all black.

I wouldn't count on it actually holding anything in or keeping anything out, it is purely decorative.

a couple quick ideas
Dry ice fogger, 1 55 gallon drum, hot water heater element, dryer exhaust hose, fan for air pressure. designs can be found online. note: don't pay retail for the dry ice it will cost $1.50 /pound or more. Find the wholesaler that provides dry ice to ice cream trucks and such. you'll pay maybe .50/pound depending on quantity. Last year I paid .30/pound for it I bought 200#

Yard sales, Saturday morning hit them all, you'll find all kinds of usable stuff

an idea for next year: i don't know if you're part of a home owner's association that requires you to keep your yard maintained, but if not then what about not keeping the lawn clean/mowed for a month or three leading up to halloween?
