This is the first time Google is getting into the hardware market, I believe.

HTC built the Nexus One. Google just put their name on it.

They aren't getting into the hardware businesses too deeply. Motorola Mobile will be run independently. Google did this to get the 17,000 patents.

And distributed it. Certainly they outsourced the actual construction, but I think you could easily say they were "in" the hardware market.

I wouldn't be surprised if Google just stripped Motorola of their intellectual property and spun off the hardware design and manufacturing.

Why is this in Hellfire?

It's controversial for companies to grow enormous.

The FTC has a hard-on for trying to define Google as a monopoly. Of...something. Anything. Idiots.

I guess they don't feel the need to bribe like Microsoft.

I don't see antitrust regulators leaping to assault Apple's software/OS/music-distribution/music-player/telephone conglomerate. Calling Google's web-advertising/search/communication-software/OS hegemony's acquisition of a hardware arm, if they even keep it, offensive over-reaching...

I have a feeling 90% of all technology-based FTC "anti-trust investigations" come about because of idiots who don't know how to look for alternatives.

"Everywhere I go, I see this 'Google' thing! Monopoly! Monopoly!" "Uh, sir, all you have to do is click here, and you'll use Bing or Yahoo, if you like..." "I SAID 'MONOPOLY,' BOY!" "Uh, OK..."

Recent reports are saying that Google was forced into the buy by Microsoft, who was also in talks with Motorola. If MS got them, they'd gain a ton of Android-related patents and a huge one-up on Google.
