Sometimes, when I go to a movie, I really just want to see snakes on a plane.

Well, since it outdid estimates by 20 million, I guess the name didn't hurt it much. Honestly, I've heard a lot more people ***** about the name "Cowboys and Aliens" being stupid than Apes.

Cowboys and Aliens is an awesome movie title. It tells me everything I need to know to realize I want to see it, thereby removing the need for a trailer.

I agree. As with Snakes on a Plane, it's brilliant in it's simplicity. It tells you everything you need to know to make the decision whether you want to see that film or not.

Hah, no clue what that's from. I think "Am I the Ultimate Fighting Champion?" That, and, "This is my circle of death" (gesturing around in his body cast).

Oh, thanks, Kaffis. Just noticed this (a week later ... ) Might have to check it out if it's on Netflix.

Thought you guys might be entertained by this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71YsRO6G7Ks

Freddie Wong does some amusing VFX videos, and apparently Jon Favreau's a pretty cool guy and wanted to do this little sketch. I was amused by it, at any rate.

Also, did anyone get an inkling that the title may have come about as some sort of reference to the child's game Cowboys and Indians? That was the sort of vibe I got when I saw the title.

The opening credits showed that the movie was based off of something else (book, comic, short story, I don't know), but I'm sure the author of the original material couldn't miss the connection to the kid's game.

It was inspired by a graphic novel:

According to the timeline on Wiki, it was pitched as a movie concept back in the 90's, then it got made into a comic, and now it's a movie.

Saw it last night. We enjoyed it. It's not meant to be high art, but it did manage to tip the hat to both genres and their archetypes appropriately.

(Taly: I agree with your take on GL.)

Before long someone is going to put out a list of all the in jokes and references in the movie. There were a lot of pretty subtle ones and a few that were not so subtle.
