They went on fire sale across the net this weekend, since HP announced they're not going to be making hardware anymore and just focusing on the WebOS platform. I picked up a 16gb Touchpad for about $113 total. Lots of talk about people porting Android over to it, which would be great. Worst case scenario, it ends up a $99, 9" digital picture frame, still cheaper than most :D

Should have mine in 4-5 days.

Yeah, it is a fantastic deal. I would have bought one if I didn't recently buy an iPad.

I have an iPad that I almost never use, and a G-Slate that I don't use much either.

The price was good, but I just don't have any need....

It's tempting ... If I buy one, how limited will it be? It'll still work on my home wireless, right? Might be nice for recipes in the kitchen or something.

I would have, but everywhere around here is sold out. And the online store, as well.

It would have been nice just to have a cheap spare tablet around the house.

This, except without the ownership of other tablets.

My boss called me on Saturday to tell me about it, and my reaction was, "And?" "That's a hell of a steal!" "What would I use it for? I read ebooks on my Nook, I have a laptop I don't mind lugging around (and, to be honest, needs to be upgraded because my browsing habits are cruel and unusual to hardware), and tablets aren't powerful enough for me to want to use for normal use. My house isn't so sprawling that I cannot walk upstairs to use my computer, and I have my phone, with *cellular data* as my handy 'I need to look up price comparisons or reviews on this impulse purchase' type usage pattern." "Yeah, that's a good point. I probably don't need one, either. Maybe I should just get one for the school so we can kick around with it in case anybody brings one in." "Yeah, that's a better idea."

I haven't done any research, but I can't imagine there is much in the way of application availability.

I guess if it serves your needs with what it comes with out of the box, or you just want it to hack around on it, then $99 is a decent deal. If you have no need for it's base functionality, or already have a redundant device, then it seems like $99 well wasted...

My understanding is that HP has announced that they are planning to stop supporting the WebOS platform, and that they are looking for a buyer for their hardware division while they concentrate on business software like IBM does. Basically, they are getting out if the consumer market entirely, and it's a long shot that they will sell the rights to WebOS to anyone who might keep it going in competition with apple and google.

Not interested in an unsupported OS tablet. If I was in the market for a tablet, I'd go along with the other sheep and get me an iPad.

HP isn't abandoning WebOS, they're focusing on it. They plan on pushing the platform forward and are no longer going to have a hand in hardware design. Common sense would lead one to believe that they're going to start licensing.

Interview about it: http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/19/the- ... the-state/

I doubt you'll be able to find one anymore, but they aren't losing any functionality. They're not limited by anything other than the fact that they probably wont get another official WebOS update. This is a solid, 10" 1.2ghz cpu, 1gb ram, 16gb memory tablet. The only reason it didn't get reviewed favorably against things like the iPad was because of the price ($399/499), but < $100 is an absolute steal.

Also, WebOS is built on linux. This gives me a very big expectation that Android will be available for this tablet at some point thanks to the community. Especially now since a lot of people (hackers included, I'm sure) probably own one when they never expected to. Where else could you get a 10" android tablet with great touch response for that price? Nowhere.

Even if they were going to stop supporting WebOS, couldn't you just flash it with android or something? I could have swore I heard someone at work say that they were going to do that with their HP tablet.

Can't do it yet, but the hope is that someone will finish up an Android port soon, yeah.

Huh, thanks. LTTP again, as usual :D

A co-worker went to Best Buy Monday AM to stand in line for one. After being there about an hour (there were about 100 people), just before the store opened, the Manager came out and told everyone that they only received 9 units and they were all sold the day before.

OnSale through Amazon. Many negative feedback reports because of it.
