Apparantely a magnitude 5.8 earthquake just hit Virginia and the tremors were felt here in the Philly area.

I was made aware of it by a sudden glut of postings on FB and then a call from Oonagh that it had just occurred.

The only earthquake I am ever likely to experience in my life and I TOTALLY missed it. Had no clue anything had happened.

We felt it even this far north. I thought i was so dizzy that I was getting ill, then people around me started standing up wondering what was going on. We had something similar happen over a year ago when a 5.0 hit the Ontario-Quebec border.

Only people who were sitting down noticed it at all, though. Anyone standing couldn't feel it as their legs adjusted for the tremor.

I'm in Charlottesville, about 30 miles from the epicenter. The shaking was a little scary at first, but not too bad. Didn't even have anything fall off a desk. I'm kind of surprised it could be felt so far north.

Our building at work shook a bit, I realized what it was after a couple of seconds. Pretty decent shake for central Ohio.

a couple of my co-workers on the east coast evacuated their buildings. (Mass, Vt, Maryland) At least one building was closed due to falling ceiling tiles.

I felt it, but I figured it was just the guys working on the building until I saw the news. it was subtle.

The 6.0 range is where most native Californians who've lived near fault zones start taking them seriously. By that I mean looking for a doorway or arch and staying away from windows. Most below that only shake things a little, sometimes rock things off shelves. Of course because we are in earthquake country, we're used to it

It was substantial enough just north of Baltimore to be an obvious quake, but not serious.

All the scientists ran for the door, none of the engineers moved, lol.

Felt it in Central NJ. More up-down movement than side-to-side, I thought. Never experienced one on this coast, but wasn't concerned. This is nothing by southern CA standards.

Felt it here between Scranton and Allentown... or more exactly, I would've if I weren't driving at the moment. I feel so ripped off! The old old house I live in apparently shook quite noticeably. I'm sure were I at my computer here, on a linoleum floor atop a wheeled office chair, I'd have felt is hugely.

But alas, robbed of the experience due to being in a moving vehicle!

Oh well. Maybe there will be another before I die. So sad!

Obama said it was Bush's fault.

I heard the DJIA was up 300 points today because Investors heard that DC had been evacuated, and that with a political vacuum in DC, the economy just might have a chance to improve... :D

I can not reach my brother and his family. They live in northern Virginia.

Earthquake deaths in North America are most often the result of traffic conditions delaying ambulances carrying patients suffering from injuries and medical conditions unrelated to the quake itself.

In other words, if you've got a clean bill of health when the quake hits, you're going to live.

Nothing, but the phones are really messed up there. He is also a doc and therefore likely busy.

My Wife and I where at Busch Gardens Virginia when it hit, we thought it was the construction of the new roller coaster. All the rides where shut down for a few hours for inspection, no big problems. Cell service sucked for a few hours after that.
