I'd certainly recommend this game. I would share Kaffis' sentiment that this is an award worthy title. And after seeing what they've done here, I'm definitely anticipating further news on their development of THI4F.

I'm kind of glad Gamestop did it. Not only did they forget to take the coupon out of my box, but because of the bad publicity they're giving me a 50 dollar giftcard and a buy 1 get 2 free used games deal...

So Deus Ex was basically free...

I am going to murder everyone that programmed this game for having other people's kills count against me for the no-kill run.

EVERYONE.

Combat is too de-emphasized - characters need a way to be a lot less squishy, earlier on.

I disagree. My brother started playing through last night; he opted for lethal weaponry on Give Me a Challenge, and hasn't had extraordinary problems shooting everybody he meets. (Except SWAT and civilians with cops around) He's only just gotten to the Detroit hub, but considering he's got 2 or 3 praxis points now, I think that's some anecdotal evidence, at least, that the early game isn't impossible to fight through.

Now, if you meant de-emphasizes combat when playing non-lethal? Yes, I agree. But isn't that kind of the point? To play without slaughtering everybody requires subterfuge, sneakiness, and patience. I don't think that's out of place. It's not like you get semi-automatic stun guns and rotary-barrelled tranq guns...

The revolver's got good stopping power and an adequate number of shots. The 10 mil headshots nicely, and has plentiful ammo to account for some misses/double-taps.

Picked this up Friday night, really enjoying it so far. I just got out on the streets of Detroit for the first time.

They did a good job in trying to replicate some of the little things about the original Deus Ex that gave it its atmosphere, like the music. I'm someone who enjoys exploring every little detail in a game, like trying to read every book and magazine cover, every label, everything, so I appreciate attention to detail. Did you examine the little toy car in the very first room you start the game in ?

Spoiler:
I like how they paid homage to the original where you can get called out for going into the women's restrooms. :D

Also, I didn't realize until I had almost completed the first real mission that the game would hide things under boxes. :x

For those who are playing the game, what augs have you been choosing early with your praxis points ?

First thing I bought was the CASIE.

I like the moments where it fails best.

Yeah I realized pretty quickly that I'd want access to at least a few more computers and terminals, so hacking was essential. I also tend to be a packrat in games like this and like to carry around as many different weapons as I can, so I grabbed an inventory upgrade too.

First couple things I've bought have been CASIE, Hacking Capture 2, Hacking Stealth 1, Hacking Capture 3, and, uh.. reflexes.

I played through, and got to China. I put it down and haven't been back to it.

Dunno why really. I think it was that that first boss fight annoyed the absolute **** out of me. I spent something like an hour and a half trying to kill that bastard, and finally had to resort to looking up online how to do it.

Edit: Apparently Gabe feels the same way.

I really hesitate to say GOTY on this. The story so far is ok, but I'm not enamored with the unnaturally fidgety models, nor am I quite liking the "combat" playthrough model. It seems that the game was built as a stealther and had combat tacked on at the end. I certainly don't feel like a cybernetically enhanced BAMF yet. I thought that's what I was supposed to be... Plus an abhorrent inventory system that is *really* annoying to me (Why do computer programs take up a slot each? Why are guns *so* bulky? grrr.)

I dunno. I'll probably go back to it, just to finish it and see hat happens, but so far I'm solidly *meh*.

Sad part is though, I *want* to like it. I love the genre of Cyberpunk/transhumanism. I love shooty things, and rpgs and.... I just can't put my finger on why this one isn't working for me.

Spoiler:
The "hook" is very good, as far as video game hooks go. However, the storytelling precipitously drops into the standard range of mediocre Quake 2 quality ... and it becomes predictable.

Playing this game, you can really see how Thief 4 is going to play and feel, which Eidos-Montreal is also working on, with the way guards patrol and how the AI is alerted, etc.

This game is so much fun. It's probably the first role-playing games where I've actually taken the time to look around and immerse myself. Also, my character makes me laugh from the way he talks to people, he's kind of a dick.

There are parts of this game where you are literally outgunned and need to sneak around. My style is shoot everyone I don't like, but I'm in a situation where that just isn't feasible, which I learned after opening about 20 times.

Finished. My opinion is tempered somewhat, but I enjoyed it. It felt like Deus Ex. I enjoy the setting, makes me want to go read my Ghost in the Shell TPB.

Spoiler:
I thought the choose your ending buttons at the end was a bit disapointing way to go...

The game really favors being sneaky. You can shoot up the place, but if the area has a lot of guards, you'll really need to have a some plan to take out a few before opening up into a gun fight. You die super fast, the dmg reduction helps, but staying out of cover is never a good idea for very long.

Friend of mine made a video for Deux Ex, so far its been the biggest motivation for me to want to play the game. Thought I'd share it here.

Picked this up on steam for 10 bucks (it's on sale this weekend).

Fun so far.

The only thing that bugs me is that during every talking cutscene, every single character in the game seems like they are tweaking-out and hopped up on cocaine. Lots, and lots of spasms, tics, and quick jerky movements. Even watching Adam just stand there and listening you see him fidgeting weirdly. Seriously, watch any cutscene with the sound off and you'll see what I mean.

Maybe I am just spoiled from all the Bioware games recently, since they tend to do more realistic and fluid human animations.

Other than that, I like it. It's no Thief, but it will do.
