There should be more bicyclists, not less. If you have a problem sharing the road, talk to your local traffic folks about having a bike lane installed. Bikes are closer to cars than pedestrians, so having them move to the sidewalk is totally inappropriate. There's no minimum speed limit where cyclists are allowed to travel.

So yeah, deal.

They are willing to share the road, but you are not. And you're calling them selfish?

Roads and freeways were built for... CARS. Get over your trendy little habit and ride around the cul-de-sac a few more times.

Actually, roads were built for a variety of reasons. Originally, roads were built for all manner of traffic, including pedestrians, horses, oxen, and all manner of "vehicle". It's really only in the last 80-100 years that your "trendy little habit" has taken over.

And no, I'm not a cyclist. I just try to live and let live, and that does not include ***** because someone added 45 seconds to my commute.

Roads built before the 20s weren't for cars.

Because one jackass on bike taking up a lane on a road holds up dozens of people in cars making them late. The speed limit is 60km/h. If you can't go that fast, you shouldn't be on the road.

(I feel the same about jackasses who get on the freeway with a car and do 80km/h in a 100km/h zone when the highway is empty. Speed the **** up. You're a safety hazard!)

Ok, that's a fine viewpoint to have. It's just a selfish viewpoint. You don't want to share with them.

I don't mind sharing, so long as they don't take up more than their share. Problem is, if they're doing 20km/h in front of me, they're taking up 3x their share. One bike is utilizing that spot in front of me 3x longer than a car would. So yeah, I have an issue "sharing." They're monopolizing the road and making it difficult for everyone else to use it.

No, I get that. I think of it more like a disability. Handicapped folks get prime parking and great seats on the train. They're slow on the sidewalk and take up more space. Old ladies don't make it across the cross walk in time.

Unless you give them their own space (bike lane), you just have to deal, IMO. They can't do the speed limit, but they've gotta get to point B. And believe me, they'd love their own space. Some folks bike to work here and they say it can be terrifying at times.

Not sure how it is for you folks, but bikers here don't seem to be much of a problem. And we have a LOT of them.

Some roads have bike lanes, most don't. But cars pass bikers all the time on two lane roads, and bikers are courteous enough to ride single file and as far to the edge of the road as possible. Most bikers here adhere to traffic laws (moreso than most drivers, I'd wager).

The cars that are most dangerous to bikers aren't the ones driving past or at intersections. No, the ones that are the most dangerous are the ones that are pulling out of a parking lot onto a street as a biker is about to ride by. 8 times out of 10, the driver will see the biker but then think to themselves "Well, I saw him coming. But..... if I pretend like I didn't see him and begin to pull out, then it's ok." The way I've found to combat this is to physically move my head and make it known that we've made eye contact. And every time.... every time.... they visibly back down. It's almost funny in a way. It's like catching an adult with their hand in the cookie jar.

An average biker is doing about 20 - 25 miles per hour on a flat piece of road. If you can't wait two seconds longer for them to pass, then **** you and your little dog too.

Other than that, here where I live, there is no reason to complain about bikers other than to just be a selfish whiner. They aren't impacting traffic in any possible way. Especially the ones turning left at an intersection. I can (and have many times) beat a muscle car from full-stop across the intersection.

This is why I refuse to use one of those little mirrors on my helmet - so I can head-check and make eye-contact when moving across lanes. Or just so they can see my head moving and realize that I see them. You're right - eye contact goes a long way to making them behave.

Hm, I'd say more like 15-17 mph, at least for me, and I consider myself a bit faster than average. Point taken, though. :D

Aren't roads paid for by gasoline taxes? Cyclists don't pay road taxes if that's true.

You must ride a mountain bike or a hybrid of some sort. When I rode from San Fran to DC, our average speed on flats with no wind was around 28 MPH (average day was 76 miles). Riding with other road bikes in local, semi-organized groups for 20-30 miles, our average pace for the group is around 25, with a group in the 22 range and a group in the 28 range. Today, far outside my riding level back then, even in what I consider somewhat hilly terrain (upstate SC - foot hills), my average speed on the few mile long flats we have is in the 20-22 MPH range.

When mountain bike riders tried to join us on rides, their top speeds at the start were in the 20 MPH range, though they were pushing to hold that, and typically fell back to 15-18 for any decent distance ride.

True, I do ride a mountain bike with road tires. (Looked at road bikes the other day, even though that's gonna have to be on hold for now.) OK, OK, I'll give you 20 mph. :D

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing when you said 17 mph. It requires more effort to maintain the same speeds on a mountain bike. They're heavier and the wheels are smaller and the tires are thicker with less PSI. They're designed to do very well on trails and rough terrain, but they aren't built for speed.

I initially started riding on the road with a mountain bike too, and eventually realized I preferred that to trail riding and decided to buy a bike built for the road. The difference was night and day.

This. I'm looking for a new bike already. I <3 my Grey Mule, but I'm wanting more of a thoroughbred ;)

However, prices being what they are, I'll have to settle for a quarter horse. Cannondale Quick 3/4, Trek FX 7.3, Specialized Sirrus Elite or similar.

Was at the bike shop this afternoon and fell in love with a CD Quick 4. God it was pretty. Still, wayyyy down the road though. ;)

Heh, guess I've forgotten what its like to ride a real road bike. I used to have one, go on long rides and all that. I just got so used to using my mountain bike with slicks and a rack to ride to work and go on tours, that I just kind of let the road bike go to hell.
