I went to the grocery store tonight to pick up some things. While waiting in line I looked over at the candy trays in the impulse racks. Not to buy, just because I was bored and wondered if there was anything new. Every regular sized candy bar was priced at $1.19.

What the . . .

When did the regular sized candy bars cross the dollar line, much less go up another 19 cents?

What is a standard sized candy bar running where you live?

I never buy it, diabetic and all, which is probably why I''m surprised. I'm just shocked at the price jump.

Every time I go to the grocery store I have a couple of WTF moments looking at prices. I think everything is going up.

I can't speak to candy bars, as I don't buy them either, but yea...

Inflation.

Same thing happened in our candy machines at work. (wth, standard snickers a dollar ten?)

I don't recall the exact price of candy bars when I was a kid, but it was somewhere between 35-50 cents. I have watched the prices continually creep up over the past few years....Dollar General has some candy bars on sale for 65 cents right now, but most places I've seen average between 85 cents and $1.19.

Atlanta area, Walmart usually has Snickers for $.50 each. At work they cost $1.10 in the machine, soda = $.95 for a 12 oz. can or $1.30 for a 20 oz bottle.

Columbus Ohio, It seems like every gas station or drug store I go into here has 2 for $1 candy bars. That is why I usually buy regular size candy for Halloween.

I know i can speak to the cost in vending machines - I had a short contract with a company that "managed" vending machines. They called up businesses and offered to manage all their vending(taking it away from local vendors) saying service would get better. It also meant all prices went up 30% in the machines

I've watched candy inflation for almost 30 years. It is a bit sad to see, but that's just how the economy goes.

Soda inflation, however, puts candy inflation to shame. I've seen 20 oz bottles raise in price 300% in just 15 years.

How much is soda out there? It's $1.25-1.35 out of most vending machines here and about $1.60 out of a cooler (gas station, grocery store, etc).

Soda prices baffle me though even at the grocery store. Coke products vary between 2.50 to 5.00 for a 12 pack of 12 oz. cans in the span of a week. (its a fairly regular cycle too) Oddly, the 6-packs of 24 oz bottle are fairly constant at 3.00$ per.

I can get a liter bottle for a dollar here.

I've seen them go as high as 1.50 or more, it really depends on the gas station and how much they know they can get away with. I live super far west of Salt Lake City, where 10 years ago it was nothing but fields and a copper mine. They finally put in a gas station 60 seconds away from my house, which beats having to drive 10 minutes to any type of store or gas station. As such, they tend to jack up the prices a bit. We bend over and take it because, well, all of us are lazy.

In the late 90s and early 2000s, I could get a 20 oz soda for 50 cents. I could get a liter for a dollar.

My dad laughs that you can go to the store (albiet a small town) and buy beer (44 oz for $1.99) for less than water (1 liter bottle for $2.15-$2.49) in mid-Ohio.

Campus vending machines have candy at 85 cents, while work has a little over a dollar, but work also has king size for most things.

I thought candy was free?

If we played for candy, I'd never have to buy halloween candy again....

The candy price increase beats inflation by quite a bit, and the reason is chocolate production. Chocolate tends to be produced in politically unstable areas, it takes a long time to get new cultivation going, and the demand has gone up while supply has gone down due to climate change and switching crops.

Interestingly, the cheapest candy I can get is from Ikea: 99 cents for a 3.5oz bar, more than double the weight of a Hershey bar, and better chocolate too... no fake vanilla and certainly higher then the 10% cocoa content.
