I don't like posting under my real name on Google because it could all be readily searchable through Google, Bing, etc.

From what I've read, it sounds like what they are trying to prevent is spammers and such. They are trying to figure out how to handle commonly known pseudonyms. Apparently they are still working on it and adjusting it.

Really, all they have to do is require the real name, but have the ability to display only your pseudonym publicly and in certain circles. I think that would solve the problem.

The policy is really aimed at businesses and celebrities, and preventing someone from impersonating someone or something they aren't.

If you register as Lebron James but aren't, that's a problem they don't want to deal with. The challenge comes in that there are many people with that name. It It also extends to nicknames, like "TheKing", "KingLebron", or in the case of businesses, "McDonalds" or "TheGoldenArches". How do you decide who gets these names?

The same thing applied to domain names and twitter and facebook profiles. A lot of people made a lot of money squatting on domain names when the Internet was first taking off.

Twitter did fine with pseudonyms, so I'm sure Google could too.

It's just on a much smaller scale now. Laws have been changed to force handing over domain names that are protected by trademarks and such.

Micro-necro to quote Google CEO Eric Schmidt...

http://news.yahoo.com/eric-schmidt-dont ... 39750.html

(emphasis mine)
Mashable's Emily Banks' Article wrote:
NPR's Andy Carvin asked Schmidt how Google justifies its names policy when it could put people at risk.

"He replied by saying that G+ was build [sic] primarily as an identity service, so fundamentally, it depends on people using their real names if they're going to build future products that leverage that information," Carvin wrote in a Google+ post. "Regarding people who are concerned about their safety, he said G+ is completely optional. No one is forcing you to use it. It's obvious for people at risk if they use their real names, they shouldn't use G+."
Paraphrasing Schmidt's comments, Carvin wrote that the Google exec also said the Internet "would be better if we knew you were a real person rather than a dog or a fake person. Some people are just evil and we should be able to ID them and rank them downward."

Yea, erm...no thanks...

I'm really wondering how they will turn Google+ around. Right now it caters to tech-bloggers (and wannabees) who like to talk to strangers using their real names, with twitter-ish feeds. Unfortunately, this is not a great deal of people. So it will be interesting to see if they can get the average person to do more than sign up and poke around.

I just started google +.

Pretty cool so far! Easy to use and an IPhone app!

Likewise, I just got around to fiddling with the albums so I could upload my Dragon*Con pictures. Damn, that was easy and quick.

Mike Elgan is wrong and I'm tired of the anti-Facebook sentiment on Google+

Mike Elgan yesterday wrote that Facebook is the new Yahoo: https://plus.google.com/113117251731252 ... s1MjY4PPZP

That is absolutely wrong.

Here's why: Yahoo has never tried to be visionary since, well, they bought Flickr about eight years ago.

Since then no one at Yahoo can explain what they are or where they are going or how they are going to get there.

Everyone at Facebook can tell me a story about how they are building a new Internet identity system (see my "Game of Games" piece for more http://scobleizer.com/2011/09/11/the-ga ... ial-world/ ).

Some additional thoughts:

1. Microsoft built its business by being a fast follower. Windows was a poor copy of the Macintosh. Didn't matter. They kept at it until it got good enough with Windows 95. Then the whole world flipped. Then they kept copying. In 1996 some kids developed ICQ. First Microsoft tried to buy that, then, 24 months later they just copied it. Ended up with hundreds of millions of people on the copy.

2. Facebook has something Google+ doesn't have: noise controls. I could spend all day long explaining the new noise controls that they shipped this week, due to super lists. These are features Google+ DOES NOT HAVE YET and, so, if you think Facebook is just copying Google+ you are absolutely 100% wrong.

3. The #1 feature is "where are your friends." So far Google is way behind there. Facebook didn't copy Google+ there. Google, in fact, has copied Facebook in many many areas (including the lame 5,000 friend limit. Couldn't they have made it 4950? Or 6,000?)

4. The arrogance here is leading the community astray. You think that saying "Google is being copied by Facebook" is going to help Google+ to grow? Really? To me it looks like a bunch of losers who don't have any real-life friends and are the types I really don't want to spend every Saturday night talking about important (or not so important) topics with.

We are in the middle of a war between Google and Facebook. They WILL COPY EACH OTHER! Get over it. That's business. Apple copied Microsoft and Microsoft copied Apple and Apple copied Xerox (I'm speaking at the building where Steve Jobs copied a lot of things out of this morning, just to put a punctuation mark on it).

Silicon Valley was built on copying. Get over it. Let's celebrate the fact that 750 million people today have features they didn't have two months ago.

I want Google to copy Facebook's other features, including noise control. Facebook is easily 18 months ahead. Google, start up your copying machines to catch the heck up!

And, +Mike Elgan you are totally underestimating Facebook if you think they are the new Yahoo. That really was a ridiculous thing to write. Not even close. Yahoo doesn't even know why they should be copying Larry Page or Mark Zuckerberg or where to start.

Robert Scoble is totally right here. There's quite a lot of pretentious Google+ users, and it can get irritating.

I'll start caring about Facebook's new features when I can use their old ones without the page forcing me to refresh (when it's supposed to be dynamic) or re-sign in daily.

I've been complaining about the shoddy coding at Facebook since well before G+ came out.

FB updates dynamically for me, and I rarely have to re-up the login credentials.

Google+, however, is pretty useless to me until (at least) they allow the main stream:

A) to be permanently sorted chronologically, not by activity (Google has this bad habit of thinking it knows what I prioritize; they keep trying to push it into Gmail but that at least can be turned off)

B) to be customized so that the main stream can present only selected followed people (i.e. just because I threw you in a circle doesn't mean I want your posts clogging up my stream...this means you, Felecia Day, Evil Hat, and Dresden characters)

I like Google+, but it has a long way to go. And frankly, if FB implements the good parts of Google+ (like circles), I'm happy with that.

Why don't you just look at the stream of people you WANT to hear from? Why do you have to use the main stream? That goes against the point of being able to filter them with circles.

Well, if they fixed the chronological issue that would be fine. If they gave me the ability to either set a particular circle as my default display stream (or allowed me to hide circles) that would work too. Something to quell the infosplooge on the default.

I think all of that is coming. People don't realize how new Google+ is. They JUST (yesterday) launched their first version of the Plus API for developers, so I think a lot of stuff is going to be happening in the next month or so. There's still so much they need to do, and people don't realize that when they're comparing it so Facebook which has half a decade worth of API development and a ton of app integration.

Yep. We're still very much in the "early adopter" phase, regardless of the fact that there's a silly high number of early adopters.

One of my spammiest stream sources is living breathing evidence of what Lenas just said; he's a Google developer I knew in high school, and even though most of his G+-related updates are focused on the Photo Albums (his place on the team, I've inferred), they come pretty damn frequently.

Not as frequently as Fred "Evil Hat" Hicks that Farsky's complaining about (and, yes, I'm itching for a similar feature for him, too, 'Skeee), but I get updates from him more than daily, often highlighting a new feature.

You are lucky, I get a mystery update every time I log into FB. One time it will list an update from 3+ hours ago, next time it will be from 10 minutes ago, next it will be from 24 hours ago.

Yep, in fact before I noticed I was having the issue myself I had my SO verify that she was set to most recent when she logs in because she told me about the problem.
