Haven't tried cd, but you can certainly do it from a thumb drive. Modified versions of firefox loaded with TOR on thumb drives is how a lot of people get around their network's filtering/installation restrictions.

Eh, if you're employer is running Windows 7 and using Active Directory for their workstations, you won't be able to run portable applications if they have any idea how to setup their policies.

Numbuk,

I used to prefer chrome because of it's speed and minimalist approach too. But now Firefox surpasses it in both categories.

I tried the new one. Didn't like it enough to go back.

How different are things Windows-side? Resource use in OSX is near identical and FF definitely isn't more minimalist UI-wise.

So funny, I generally never think about my browser. I generally use an old version of Firefox, because I hate upgrading for some reason. This machine is on version 3.6.22, and I just discovered today that I can' see images on a baseball discussion site that I go to, unless I use a newer browser. /sigh Guess it's time to press the upgrade button again.

Chrome never did it for me, though.

Just set updates to automatic and forget about it. Not updating your browser is akin to you saying "No thanks" to someone offering you a new car engine every few months free of charge with more horsepower and better mileage. Oh, and he works on your car while you're sleeping, so you never have to be inconvenienced.

You should always keep your browser up to date. One of the great things about Chrome is that it autoupdates by default and I dont think you can even turn it off.

If I wasn't so lazy i'd get screenshots.
Memory Usage all on the same page:

iexplore.exe 22,968K (! - i know, right? I checked IE9 against the other two for comparison right now)
firefox.exe 47,352k
chrome.exe 51,188K

As for the interface, your firefox appears to have a different theme than mine. Mine is slightly different than Chrome, but overall just feels more compact.

How many tabs did you have open?

Where chrome really shines is when you have a bunch of tabs open.

Just the one, admittedly.

Memory usage as a lump sum doesn't mean nearly as much these days. A lot of it is pre-allocated and such because there is so much available.

I prefer to wait until I've got replacements for all my addons/they've been updated.

I hate it when I update the browser at the first prompt, and lose a bunch of functionality.

I guess I should update, don't quite know why I'm so resistant. Just hate change, I guess. Heck, I'd still be using Win 2000 if i could. :D

Yeah, that's the thing that makes me start looking at other browsers when it begins to slow. I am a tab whore and it's not uncommon for me to have anywhere to a dozen, two dozen, or even more open at a time.
