I used to say really bad words when I was very young, but now I hardly ever do. Funny how that is.

The only time I ever swear, is when Kirra beats me at word games (in other words .. NEVER ! ) =D

Swearing typically removes emphasis from actual points you are making and redirects it towards emotion. Just not my style.

The rule when Alex was little was that he could say anything he wanted in his room with the door closed. And he could use cuss words in context (if I drop something in my foot I'm gonna cuss. Why shouldn't he?), but he was not allowed to be unkind. So 'I dropped the f***ing plate on my foot' was fine but 'Mama, you're a doodyhead' was gonna get called out. And I let other people react to his language however they wanted to, because it's important for kids to learn that 'appropriate' is fluid and situational.

Seriously???

You gave your iPad to your sister because you couldn't take the stress of my constant scrabble domination....

I agree that it's a respect issue, I never, even to this day, swear in front of my parents.

I do swear, however, and it tends to be when I'm irritated or frustrated. I don't just swear as a routine thing. Unfortunately, I have an Irish temper...

But at least when my patients piss me off I am discrete about it

Thankfully my wife keeps me in check about swearing in front of the younger kids. I'm always worse when I get back from drill. When I first got home from Iraq, I could hardly get through a sentence without swearing.

I don't usually swear in front of my mom, but she's not exactly got virgin ears herself. My dad and I swore in front of each other all the time.

I agree kids swearing is low class. I also believe they should be taught that certain words are not appropriate. Sure they have the capability of saying them. Just as they have the capability of running a stove, operating a table-saw, or using volatile chemicals. But I think they should understand the power behind the words (because even if you yourself don't believe they aren't much, doesn't mean society doesn't) and how damaging they can be to themselves (in the eyes of others) and to others. They should be taught this, and then as an adult they can choose what they want to do with what they've learned.

A kid armed with swear words, and understands the impact they can have, can make a difference.

When I was five, my friend Davy made me really, really mad. I don't remember what he did, but I remember I was livid. And I was going to call him the worst possible thing I could think of to get even. So I thought of the biggest number I knew about, and I thought about the worst possible word I knew. And then I called him "A hundred bags of ****."

Sure, I didn't know the meaning of the word. But I knew it was the worst and it had a measure of power. And it sure did. He looked like he had been smashed in the chest. I achieved what I was after.

I knew what I was doing, and because I knew of the impact such a word had on others I knew it would affect him greatly. And also because I knew of it's power I felt very bad afterwards. To this day I regret it.
