Seriously, this is epic!

Sixteen losses in their last twenty one games!

Couldn't have happened to a nicer bunch. :p

Josh Beckett had a 4-1 lead going into the sixth inning and set down the first batter he faced, Matt Angle, on a fly ball to right field. It was the 11th straight batter he had retired.

That's a game you have to win. Baltimore is a bad team and the Red Sox desperately needed to win, especially given the opportunity to further expand their lead on the Rays.

But Beckett melted down. From that point, six of the next 12 batters had hits off the righthander and one of the outs was a screaming liner to center that Jacoby Ellsbury made a terrific catch on.

Beckett was finally pulled in the eighth inning. With the score tied, 4-4, he had put runners on second and third with one out. In came Alfredo Aceves, who was given specific instructions not to throw a strike to free-swinging Vladimir Guerrero.

He threw strike one and Guerrero, amazingly, took it. He threw another strike and Guerrero rifled it into center field, driving in two runs.

The Sox offense, meanwhile, folded up. Tommy Hunter and three relievers retired the final 11 batters in order. One ball left the infield. Once the Sox had a 4-1 lead in the fifth, they had one more hit.

“It’s crazy. I’ve never seen anything like that around here as long as I’ve been here,” a somber David Ortiz said. “If you would have told me in August this would happen in September, I would have laughed at you.”

The Red Sox were a half-game out of first place and on pace to win 98 games on Sept. 3. They since have lost 14 of 18 and are now in a desperate fight to make the postseason.

“I’ve been here nine years. We’ve never collapsed that bad,” Ortiz said. “Trust me, we’ve been through some tough times. But this is bad. No matter what we do, things are going to be bad. … Right now it’s depressing.”

Despite the loss, the Sox increased their lead in the wild card race to 2.5 games over the Tampa Bay Rays, who were swept in a doubleheader by the AL East champion Yankees.

Look out for the Angels. Los Angeles beat Toronto and is now tied with the Rays.

How sad is it for Sox fans that the Yankees are doing more to put your team in the playoffs than your own team is? Somehow, the Yankees are carrying the Sox.

“I’m not in a very good mood right now. We just lost a game, we’ve just lost a lot of games,” manager Terry Francona said. “We’re going to have to fight for everything we get the rest of the way and make it happen to get where we want to go.

"We certainly haven’t made it very easy for ourselves. That doesn’t mean we can’t get where we want to go. But we have our work cut out for ourselves.”

The Red Sox are 5-16 in September.

“That’s a sign of a [expletive] team. Good teams don’t go 5-16 in any month,” said second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who sat slumped in a chair at his locker after the game, staring straight ahead in apparent disbelief.

The loss also left the Red Sox 45-36 at home, their worst record since the 2002 team was 42-39. The Sox dropped 20 of their final 33 games at Fenway Park and were 3-7 on the last homestand.

The next game won’t be until April unless the Sox can find some answers on the road.

“Is there anything left we can try? We can play better,” Pedroia said. “That’s basically it.”

Edit: It's only fair to add the Braves to this post, even after the fact. Their collapse wasnt' quite as epic as the Red Sox, but it was still noteworthy).

Well, should have happened to the Yankees, too ...

Ain't just the Sox. The Braves are on the verge of blowing an 8 game lead as well.

Phillies' postseason has been all but guaranteed awhile ago (and fully guaranteed recently), but we too have been in terrible slump the last two weeks or so.

It's nice to not have to worry about making the postseason and all, but the thought of making it there with people unable to hit a ball... bleh. Something needs to turn around soon or we won't see the World Series! If even the NLCS...

**** BOSTON.

But back to your post, everyone in Cleveland knew this wasn't our year. That being said everyone I know was shocked by how far we were able to push the Mystery Machine once the wheels fell off due to injuries.

Started out looking like things were going to end up somewhat anticlimactic, but this night sure turned into something memorable!

TB game was just crazy.

Really wanted the Phillies to lose tonight! We've shown signs of coming out of that horrible slump, but I remain unconvinced. We're going to have to if we want to beat the Cardinals, who just took 3 out of 4 from us last week.

Let's see how things go... :p

edit: oh! Found out the other day that I'm pretty sure I went to high school with a player recently called up for TB. I was actually good friends with his sister when I was a young lad! He struck out with 2 guys on base today though. :( Still kinda neat! Doubly so since their manager is from the same town that that high school is in... for this area, where absolutely nothing happens, that is pretty neat for us. :p

Bet one of those teams is wishing they could take back a loss in April, hey?!

I'm sure that a lot of folks in Boston and Atlanta (mainly Boston) are shopping for new TV's today.

Not the old school fans. I didn't even watch the game. Boston didn't deserve to win this year. They are littered with prima donnas, and saddled to too many questionably large salaries being paid to guys who aren't interested in getting their uniforms dirty. They had no leadership, no sense of urgency, and no heart. They rolled over and showed us their bellies for the entire month of September; while the Rays were doing what play-off teams do: circling the wagons, playing with pride, not showing any signs of quitting, and leaving nothing at all in the locker room.

Tampa deserves to be playing in October, and hopefully the 2012 Red Sox can learn something from the heart they showed, and produce a product worth purchasing next year.

Foamy:

You can talk **** all you want about the Braves; at least our fans don't come to games armed with D-Cells in case the other team might win.

NLDS series is tie 1-1 in the 6th inning of game 3 as I post this, but I'm pretty sure you won't have to worry about that. Someone apparently has flipped the switch back to 'off' on the Phillies offense... of which some players have been off entirely for weeks.

We got Carpenter out early, back to what is regarded as one of the worst bullpens in the NL, which we just beat up the day before, and... something like 4 hits and 0 runs in 12 innings since?

I'd grumble about a short 5 game series making it easier for worse teams to advance, but given the Phillies' offensive (no pun intended!) history this year and last I don't think it would matter.

It's still too early to say anything with certainty, of course, but... this is what Phillies fans have worried about all year. :p

What is a Stanley Cup? Is that some kind of NASCAR thing?

Hope the St Louis fans/players bring some hard hats with them........could be a lot of batteries flying Friday night if the Phillies blow this series!

Looking like Arizona is gonna make this a series also. Possibly 3 of the 4 series going to the wire. Great stuff!
