Aw, hell with it. Not really concerned about my RL name. Matt Golden. Hit me up.

Yeah, a couple months ago, I looked at my "Kaffis" vs. real name firewalling, and decided I've (consciously, each time) let it break down enough to the point where it's not really worth keeping up pretenses that Kaffis is anonymous anymore. I've never really used the anonymity shield to protect me from anything I'd have a problem with owning up to, socially or professionally, anyways, so it doesn't really matter. Or rather, anything where it might, I wasn't using Kaffis for, anyways.

So circle me up, I guess, if you like.

Facebook doesn't suck... It's polished, easy to navigate, has lots of features, and is a very popular website. Anyone who thinks Facebook 'sucks' has a pretty odd way of rating websites, in my opinion.

FB doesn't suck as a service, but as a service provider they've made a lot of poor decisions.

It sucks because it's an overly chatty, bloated memory hog of a website. It also likes to soft-lock its process a lot on me. And if I had a nickel for every time it ate a comment or refused to respond to a button click except to say "we're sorry, but the action failed" or whatever and forced me to reload the page...

This may be related to the sixteen billion tabs you have open at any one time on your computer. I don't have these problems. :P

And I don't have these problems on non-Facebook pages. That's all I'm saying. If it were my browsing habits, I'd take responsibility. But Facebook is not well enough coded to support my browser habits well. Thus, it is more poorly coded than its competitors.

Also, as somebody who has access to the bandwidth breakdowns for a post-secondary campus, I speak with authority when I say that Facebook is ridiculously chatty, both up- and down-stream.

I have a feeling that at this point, Facebook is rather like EverQuest was (at least, when I stopped playing, around Gates of Discord)...so much new code has been piled on and piled on and piled on that original framework that nothing really fits together cleanly, it just works, and to hell with streamlining it.

I'm interested to see what happens when they roll out the new system. If they started from scratch with it, it may be better-behaved. But regardless of whether or not it's chatty, I don't get the crashes or load errors you do. I'm guessing it's probably a bit of column A, a bit of column B.

Oh, I have no doubts that its faults are exacerbated by my browsing habits, and thus are less visible/apparent to other users.

I'd say that you're probably backwards on this. Facebook has some of the best developers in the world working for them, and they're very concerned with efficiency. Unfortunately, they're also very concerned with offering some cutting-edge ****. It's a very hard tightrope to walk, trying to support my nightly builds of Chrome or my dev build of Windows 8, while simultaneously providing the same service to someone running IE7 on Windows XP SP2.

I think, for the mind-boggling amount of traffic that Facebook gets, the website performs amazingly. When people say something on Facebook "doesn't work" or needs to be refreshed to show up, that's not your browser, that's not the website code working incorrectly, 99% of the time that's just server load and your request never got returned.

I noticed a few more people in my stream when the last batch of changed went through on FB. I've been pretty happy with it so far but I'm probably not on it enough to see many of the problems.

I expect there to be a large split at some point, when kids/teens/young adults no longer want to be on the same social networking site as their parents. The new domain, of course, could still be owned by Facebook.

I find the concept great, and the fact that it's Facebook gathering all that data to build the timeline terrifying.

It's only gathering what you give it...

Right, and what other people give it about you. However, to most people, "privacy policy" means nothing. Hell, these are people that had no idea everything they were putting out there was public to begin with, and once it's out there, it's there forever.

Honestly though, I'm more mistrustful of Facebook as a corporation. Sure, there have been several investigations now, but there is no reason for them to maintain any sort of protection of the user. So why would they?

Mark Zuckerberg's views on privacy are pretty well documented.

There's no protection against any software or 'app' unless you can read all the source code... you just have to take their word for it. Google has access to all your emails for example, and Dropbox can look at anything you have there.

It's funny that people think anything about the timeline is new other than interface. FACEBOOK ALREADY HAS ALL THAT INFO.

This is why Facebook stole Diaspora/G+ "circle" idea.

Hate to break it to you, bro, but he's right.
In fact, I don't think there even will be such a thing as "privacy" as we used to know it anymore....

We got a notice from our bank yesterday saying basically "we are sharing our customer's transaction information with our affiliates and there is nothing you can do to stop us." I would quote it all verbatim but I think my husband threw it away.

There is no privacy anymore in regards to people sharing your information for marketing purposes. Your online activity, your bank transactions, your personal emails, your phone calls....none if it is private anymore and there's really not much you can do about it except decline to participate in the use of modern technology.

There is one thing you can do...

Find another bank...

Call me cynical, but I really don't think that matters...I think every bank either does this already, or will do this. I think this is the price we are paying for technology and this trend of sharing what used to be "private" information for gathering marketing data is only going to continue.
Yeah, I could get another bank, but why bother? If they aren't sharing our info now, they will be soon, along with everyone else.

Yeah, I could get another bank, but why bother? If they aren't sharing our info now, they will be soon, along with everyone else.

Only if you allow them to succeed. If you find another bank that's not sharing the info, and you're not alone in doing so, then the banks that share info will lose customers and fail, which means the ones who haven't started doing it "yet" will not only succeed, but see that changing that policy would lead to failure.

Are enough of our society conscientious enough to notice, or do enough even care? I don't know. But I do know that apathy and defeatism will only encourage and enable it.

I see where you're coming from, Kaffis, I do. I just think that even if we try to fight it, this is where things are headed anyway and I have other fights in my life requiring more of me...there's only so much LK to go around, yanno. Sad, but true!
