I did, Colphax..as soon as they opened this morning. (I updated later in the thread.)
Kitty is sore and internally bruised and pinched nerve, but the vet thinks she'll be ok after a couple of weeks. She's on antibiotics as well for any abcesses that may form from the trauma.

I'm sorry for the additional expenses you guys incurred, but I'm overjoyed that A) the kitten is going to be OK and B) you're getting rid of the dog. It sounds as though he's effectively a 'special needs' dog, and the environment you can provide for him isn't the one he needs, and until he's gone, he'll provide a threat to your existing family.

He's been walking around the house all morning with his muzzle on, stalking the fireplace (where the kitten was last night when he attacked) and keeps trying to sneak into my bedroom (where the cats are currently.)

This, if I got a dog and it tried to attack the other pets in the house... it owuld be on the way to the pound. If it came through me to get the other pets, the flipping thing would have its gorram neck broken.

I'm trying to find him a home without having to take him to the pound...he's wearing a muzzle right now except when he's crated. If I can't find him a good home within a week, I will take him somewhere.

It shouldn't be too hard to find a no-kill husky shelter you can surrender it to if it comes down to that.

Northern breeds take a lot of work, even when you get them as puppies. When you get it as an adult with behavioral problems you need to be a professional to have any chance with them.

Edit - Female malamutes are probably the easiest to train/live with if you really have your heart set on that kind of dog.

Timmit, we had bought a female purebred husky puppy last year after our first daughter died and the dog died a few weeks after we got her...ugh!
We just saw this husky and he looked so much like her and we miss her because she was beautiful and playful and energetic and oh so sweet....he has all of those things as well, but he's a cat-killer and the vet told me that even a professional wouldn't be able to get him out of that at this point in his life. The vet said that urge to kill would always be there, especially since he's apparently killed before and has gotten a taste for it?
He was kind of an impulse addition to our family....if we ever do get another dog, it will be with a lot of forethought into the breed and probably not a full-grown dog.
As far as no-kill shelters, we don't have those around here, but I've already had a woman respond to my ad and come and look at him. I was very honest about him and she is going to think about it. I'm sure I'll be able to find him a good home...he is a gorgeous dog and a sweetie.

I recommend what we did: Look for dogs from a local rescue, one that you can call and ask about or get details online. Our first requirement for a dog is that it had to get along with cats. Good rescues will not only be able to answer this, but will have first hand experience and knowledge whether it's the case or not.

The rescue we went with told us that our dog is great with cats, and that in fact she would go to many of the kittens and lick them like they were pups (and the kittens enjoyed it). They were also up front about our dog not getting along with some dogs, which we've found is also certainly the case and not that big of a deal.

Getting a dog from a rescue is not only great for all the up front knowledge you can get, but you're also helping give an abandoned/abused dog a loving home.

Also, a rescue will take back the dog if you ever find you can't keep it for any reason, and you're assured that the dog is up to date on all his vet stuff.

Thank you for the suggestions. We re-homed the dog tonight with a lovely couple who was willing to love him despite his palate for kitties!
I think we're going to hold off on getting a third dog for the time being....our two husky/shepard mixes loved having a playmate, but the past couple of days have made me realize maybe we don't want to mess with a good thing.

How is the kitten doing?

Much better, Midgen! Thank you for asking. Yesterday she started poking her head out from under the bed to reach the food dish, and after Talon left for his new home late last night, I brought Sasquatch (the kitten) out into the dining room and she walked around a bit. Still limping and obviously she is in a little pain from the bruises still, but I'm fairly confident she is going to make a full recovery.
She's back under the bed this morning, but I anticipate she'll do that for a few more days as she is healing.

/huggles to the kitten

I seriously was never a cat person until I was adopted by Cash. Granted, he's a special case, but still...

I've owned several huskies. First, they are fine with children, but keep in mind that they play rough.

They are hunters. It's just what they do. One of my huskies has taken out the following:

A deer, two cats, a sheep, a groundhog, a raccoon, and several rabbits. Another has taken out several rabbits.

Keep in mind these are highly socialized, highly trained, very intelligent dogs. Extremely gentle (other than some rough play) with people, and very lovable. WONDERFUL with other dogs, including small annoying yappy dogs (no threat there in the least).

You cannot (should not, anyway) attempt to train the hunting out of a husky. One other part of their personality is their intelligence manifests in such a way that they "consider" your commands like a child would, instead of blind obedience. This is a very independent breed. Training out the hunter will only leave you with dead pets and a poor relationship with your dog.

Whomever suggested the big tomcat idea is barking up the wrong tree with this breed. Dog will take it out in a heartbeat.

The only success I've ever had was with a mean cat when my husky was a puppy. This same husky killed 2 other cats when it got a bit older. They are smart enough to understand the difference between all cats and THAT cat. Moreover, a full grown husky won't put up with a mean cat.

Wonderful pet if you get rid of the cats. Otherwise - get rid of the dog.

Doh, looks like this is decided. Have no fear, LK - if you take the dog even to the pound, he will be adopted in about 5 minutes.

But giving the dog to a "proper" home will be the best for the dog (if you care at this point).

Yes, I cared about Talon...he got quite attached to me in the span of a couple of days...I love huskies and I prefer my dogs with intelligence...I just really love my kitties, they are my fur babies, and I didn't want to spend the rest of their lives constantly having to be on guard in my own home between the pets, so he went to his new home last night.

Were you the owner of the sheep? I'm surprised the dog is still alive, livestock owners are pretty quick to insist on a dog that takes one of theirs down be put down.

I owned a fantastic husky when I was growing up and my experiences are similar to Arathain. Mine also claimed itself a deer and a variety of other small game. That said we lived out in the country and it made for one happy dog. LOL
