Would anyone have any advice for me?

I have a laptop, but I want to buy a desktop computer.

Would I be able to get one for around 1k? I have a monitor already, so I just want to get the most I can for this amount.

Any suggestions? My laptop is Dell, they are the only company I have ordered from.

I'm sure we could offer you some recommendations if you told us what you wanted the computer to do.

Do you want to play modern 3d games on it or not?

I need it for school. Typing papers is pretty much what I need to do, maybe some power point presentations ect.

No, I don't really play games on computer, Lex, I have an xbox, so I don't think there is anything I would even know to play.

For that, you don't need to spend close to 1k for it.

Of course, if you do want to spend that much, the new 21.5" iMacs are quite nice, and more than capable of doing what you need as well.

Honestly, I'd just go with an off the shelf Dell desktop for about $500-$600, for what you describe. You could even go with a reduced footprint model, depending on where you want to put it.

I'm not sure what a desktop will do for you that your laptop won't, but you can get a docking station for your laptop if all you want is a desktop like computing experience.

Reduced footprint? Umm sorry guys, remember you are talking to a nurse...I know a little bit bout computers but not a lot. Hmm maybe a Mac is a good idea, I hear they have less trouble...

Well, my laptop is kinda old and has Vista, so I wanted to get something faster and figured a desktop would be the way to go?

you could get a mac, or you could take a look at the deals dell has every week. there's usually something decent for around $400 if all you're looking to do are word processing and powerpoints

I just got my wife a Macbook Air, and I'm planning on getting her an iMac around Christmas.

It works out better for both of us the less maintenance I have to do for her computers, and Macs are much lower maintenance than PCs.

I'm not sure what you're looking for, but the iMac would be a nice starting place- it's a solid computer, and Apple has this years models selling refurbished for about 20% off, which is a nice deal. As your laptop finally ages out, they pair really nicely with one of the Macbook Airs, in my opinion- one's very portable, the other makes a nice at-home workstation.

When I say reduced footprint, I just mean a smaller tower- they have less airflow if you have a really hot and heavy CPU and graphics card, but if you're mostly doing lighter stuff, they just don't take up nearly as much room.

The Mac Mini's are tiny, and this years model is a pretty beastly little thing, for around $550-$740.

Dell has minis as well (but I wouldn't go for them), but they also just have small form-factor towers that you might like.

Are you going to replace your old laptop, or just use the new one mostly but use the laptop too?

Only online classes, or is there a possibilty of classroom classes?

With all the traveling and photography you've been doing lately, you might want to consider another laptop.

Agree. I don't think I will ever own another desktop. There's no point in having something so big around unless you're an extreme gamer, really.

I also am never buying a desktop again. Buying a desktop nowadays is a mistake in my opinion... they are on their way out for all but extreme gaming. And even that could die when there isn't enough money in it.

But sure, go ahead and buy something that is facing obsolescence.

All tech falls in that category. Stuff is only new and shiny for a few months at best before it falls down a rung on the ladder.

That's not exactly true. Laptops, tablets (probably), gaming consoles, and smart phones will not be obsolete for a much longer time.

Check out cyberpowerpc.com I bought my daughter's laptop for college from there and will be getting my desktop there as well. It focuses on gaming machines, but there are a lot of inexpensive options that will do everything you want. You can even throw in some nice features like a solid state drive for your windows to make it boot up really fast, and you can get lighted case in various colors, and lighted keyboards and mouses and customize the colors of the CD/DVD drive and all kinds of stuff that doesn't matter much to the actual performance but is basically cheap and makes it all your own. I'm leaning towards the Dragon Rider case with blue lighting and a blue lightup keyboard and mouse for mine!
