Or nooks.
Been able to do that on the Sony Reader for a long time now. Kindle is like, the last e-reader to get that feature.

I don't really care about the nook/kindle wars. What ultimately made my house a kindle house a while back was a couple of things:

- The speed of which a page changes
- Price
- Not being able to accidentally delete a book and being forced to re-purchase it (seriously, this was a big factor)
- The really slick leather case accessory that had a built-in LED that did not require a battery; it uses the kindle's battery. (The new Kindle Touch will have one of these too)
- And ultimately, if one of these giant companies were to topple and leave the online reader business -- as highly unlikely as that may be -- if I was forced at gunpoint to pick which one would remain standing it would be Amazon.

Interesting article on the tough road that Barnes & Noble has ahead given the new Kindle announcements.

Unfortunately, that's a good analysis.

There's something that can save Barnes and Noble's marketshare on the ebook market, though.

Color eInk nook. Make it happen, guys, and you corner the comic and periodical market.

Also, I wouldn't be too quick to call their tablet offering dead. So long as their tablet has access to the Android market, they're fine. Savvy customers not already brand-married to Amazon will recognize the advantage of a cheap tablet that can offer them Netflix, access to any ebook store they choose, Google's Android app store without the Amazon middle-man taking his cut, etc.

95,000 Kindle Fire pre-orders on the first day. Expected to sell 3 million by year's end.

Anyone have a Kindle Touch? Thoughts? I just got a $50 Amazon gift card that's burning a hole in my virtual pocket.

Nay...not super-thrilled with the touch aspect of the Nook Touch (though I liked the device otherwise), and I don't really care for the silver-y color of the new Kindles. I'm keeping my third-gen Kindle (the graphite-colored one with the keyboard) and just adding a Fire to the family.

My real concerns:

Does it read books guud?
Does the interface/screen lag at all?
How is the text-to-speech? Robotic?

Weight, size, color, name or disposition of the device creators all irrelevant. Every one of my previous Kindle purchases has been read on a 4.1" cell phone screen.

I am the what 1% considers entirely too wealthy for my own good; consequently, I shall not dispatch Doombots whose sole purpose is to keep Taskiss out of the 1% without killing him.

Back on topic, I did some research into the Kindle Fire (my mother has an older kindle and was thinking of a tablet for e-mail, websurfing while watching TV, and doesn't want to pay the ridiculous prices for the iPad) and I have to say, this thing looks astounding. While it's a bit small, I think the screen will be great for watching films/TV on the go, and it will be more portable than the iPad2. They haven't released the core speed, but current speculation is that it's a dual core 1ghz and almost the same display resolution as ipad2. For people who just want to consume content (lack of cameras) it's awesome. I have to say, other than facetime/skype, there's no reason to have a camera on a tablet, taking a picture is awkward and the quality is much less than even my point and shoot 12 megapixel.

Basically, if you like amazon, your music/books/etc will be stored in the cloud (a good thing since it only has 6gb memory), then this thing will work great for you. If you hate amazon, then this isn't the one for you. With the presales already ridiculous, if this thing can maintain good word of mouth it's probably going to be THE ipad alternative for the forseeable future.

For what it's worth, Barnes & Noble has announced a follow-up to the Nook Color as a proper, purpose-built tablet that looks set to compete directly against the Kindle Fire.

They're partnering with Netflix and Hulu since they don't have their own streaming media service.

I admit, and I both intrigued and frightened by the Kindle "Silk" web browser.

I'm definitely interested to see if it improves the browsing experience as much as they claim.

I'm also concerned about the privacy risks.
