Bah. I've got too much music, and I'm not even a pirate or compulsive collector.

I rip all my own CDs. To start off, I did a big batch of it a few years back when I first got my iPhone. So I used iTunes, and ripped everything at 192kbit as my personal sweet spot between my not-quite-tin ear and size.

Now, the problem: a couple of the CDs I'd used in that batch were old favorites that had been knocking around in my CD case for years and years and years... and either that, or some hiccups while encoding, I ended up with some .mp3s with glitches.

However, since this was a batch job, I wasn't giving each album I ripped a full listen as I went. So, I cobbled together my playlist, threw it on my phone, and went on with my life.

Most of the time I listen to my music, I'm either in the car, or falling asleep. As such, neither is well-suited to making notes when I notice one of the glitches. And I can never remember what songs are glitched, to go back and either correct them or seek out replacements.

And it's maddening to me. But I've got over a hundred hours of playtime in my (comparatively) modest collection, and those glitches are following me around to different formats as I change phones, change players, and now have uploaded **** to Google Music... And I just can't generate the motivation to sit through and listen to everything.

I feel your pain. I have some ripped music that I don't even remember where I stashed the originals for, and some are pretty rare, or out of print.

It's maddening when I stumble across an old rip that has a skip or something in it.

Great, thanks, now you've convinced me not to throw out my LPs after I digitize them.

You should keep the originals because they will be cool to have in the future, possibly as decorations. Just my 2 cents.

I wonder if iTunes match might help.
I'll be curious to see if they offer something like a find and replace all option, specifically for people who ripped their CD collections at lower bitrates.

Except, I have no interest in having a bunch of ALACs or AACs.

The entire point was to make things more portable, which now includes my Google/Android world instead of the iPhone I ditched two or three years ago.

It also doesn't help me identify which ones I need to re-rip or replace.

Okay no really I gotcha. I was thinking to not identify which ones to replace at all, and just upconvert your entire library from 192kbps to 256 - it be a making a concession that your library would get a fair bit bigger but it'd also mean not having to cherry pick the problem tracks out. That is, if there's an option to just replace everything in the software; I haven't played with iTunes Match yet. It's still in beta as far as I know. I just saw you were using iTunes and figured you were a little more deeply into the ecosystem than you are. If you're just using iTunes, and not storing in native format, and also using a portable that doesn't especially care for the native format, then there may not be much for it but to just re-rip as you come across ones that are annoying you.

Unless... Okay if iTunes does allow you to find/replace everything in your library with what they have on their server (and not just pick out individual tracks), you'd be stuck with AAC files, but only temporarily. If you change the import settings in iTunes to use an mp3 rather than AAC encoder, a menu option appears that allows you to convert any track in your library to mp3. You could just select your entire library, hit "create mp3 version", and go to bed. Dunno if it's worth it or not, especially considering they want $25 for iTunes Match, but it's the only option I could think of that didn't involve re-ripping on your part.
