At the bottom of the page it says the 3GS is compatible. I'm not sure how well, like, how many of the features of iOS 5 are supported, but there it is.

It wouldn't surprise me if Siri wasn't supported. I can live without that.

But he asked about the 3G, not the 3GS.

Siri isn't supported on anything except the 4S, iOS 5 is supported on the 3GS, 4, and 4S.

I was pretty specific about the 3GS supporting 4/5 and not the 3G. Kate has the 3G.

ONLY the 4S supports Siri.

Neph beat me.

Which kind of boggles my mind. It's not like Siri is anything super-special. I know Android phones have had similar capabilities (heck, my phone has a dedicated hardware shortcut button for it) for ages.

I don't think the Android speech system is quite so complex as Siri.

http://www.tuaw.com/2011/10/05/iphone-4 ... y-to-siri/

Can they do all that **** (I honestly don't know)? Can you say, "Call Mom" and have your phone know who you're talking about? Etc., etc. The upgraded hardware probably isn't for processing the speech itself, but for automating all of the things you can do with it.

Hmm. Maybe a bit more versatile, and I'm not sure my phone can do text to speech as part of it (I don't use the feature a lot). But I know I can do web searches, call/text contacts, etc.

Some of the specialized stuff like weather could be duplicated on my system with a Google search.

I have the 3GS, that's why I checked that and why I mentioned I could live without Siri. See my previous post. I put the link for anyone else who wanted to check whatever they might want.

Android's been able to do it for awhile.

While I admit it's further along than I expected, that still doesn't quite seem to be the same.

Yeah, this. I say "Call Christine" and it is smart enough to read through my contacts list and call her. You can also say things like "Set timer ten minutes" or "Set alarm six thirty am" for different alarm timers.

I can also say "play third eye blind" and it searches my music for that band and starts playing it.

I also use it heavily for google searches and google maps searches. "Find brazilian restaurants" for example.

Yeah, nothing new to see here on Android. :D

Edit: I should mention this is just from the *stock* voice search feature on Android, not the app that Coren mentions.

I've been using voice search in Android for a while... I use it for navigation, dialing, google searches, places, etc....

I mostly use it when I'm driving and in 'hands free' mode (I have blue tooth integration to my car audio system and a microphone on my sun visor).

It's not perfect, but it's functional enough to be useful...

If I'm in a place where I can safely type I usually just use my fingers.

That can't possibly be true! Everyone knows that innovation ONLY happens at Apple! You sir are a liar and I fart in your general direction.

my 3gs has had voice recognition long as I've had it. (hold down the home key for 4 seconds IIRC) if I want to search I'll use dragon, (free download)

Yah, I just mentioned the app because it is quite cool, and has features that the stock Android (and afaik Siri) doesn't have yet. What first sold me on Vlingo was reading about the guy who had his set up to be totally hands off...he just says "Hey, Baby" and his phone replies in a female British accent, "Yes, Baby?" to let him know Vlingo is ready to take commands.

Does anyone know when Apple is going to invent multi-tasking?

The issue with multi-tasking is that processes in the background can drain your battery life very quickly. If you run the wrong app, you will have to recharge your phone a lot. This is one thing I don't like about Android.

Quote:
Android has no such restrictions and as a result battery life can suffer with poorly implemented apps. As Steve Jobs said [during the iPhone 4.0 announcement], if you need a task manager, you already failed. I think it is safe to assume that Apple thoroughly tested the different methods of allowing background processes before deciding on this restrictive, yet power friendly implementation."

It's the standard apple implementation. While android allows you to run whatever apps you like and manage them with a task manager (trusting the user), apple restricts it to their own idea what's best. It's obviously worked out for them, most people don't want to learn anything about what they're using, they just want it to work, and apple is good at that.

But apparently (at least some) Apple users lament the lack of multi-tasking...

Well yeah, people in tech, or in tech publications, or who actually care how things work. Most people don't. I just taught a non-techie friend how to copy and paste text on her ipad a few days ago. She's had it for 6 months.

I think some people just aren't very curious about how tech things work and don't care about finding out. I can't fault them really, because I have no idea how anything in my car works, which I use every day.

Some people are happy and content on their happy little Apple Islands...

The rest of us like to do cool things like connect our devices to our other devices as USB drives so we can drag and drop files to them :p
