All of this reminds me of a book I read quite a few years ago: West of Eden: The End of Innocence at Apple Computer, by Frank Rose. It's a definite "must read" if you really want to understand Steve Jobs. The author contributed an article to Wired a few months ago based on the book and everything that transpired since then:

The End of Innocence: What Happened After Apple Fired Steve Jobs

It makes a rather fitting eulogy, I think.

Finally, a bit of levity I'm stealing from reddit. Not in bad taste (IMHO) but I'm spoilering it anyway in case it's "too soon":

I suspect Steve would enjoy being remembered that way.

Quote:
For our fifth D conference, both Steve and his longtime rival, the brilliant Bill Gates, surprisingly agreed to a joint appearance, their first extended onstage joint interview ever. But it almost got derailed.

Earlier in the day, before Gates arrived, I did a solo onstage interview with Jobs, and asked him what it was like to be a major Windows developer, since Apple’s iTunes program was by then installed on hundreds of millions of Windows PCs.

He quipped: “It’s like giving a glass of ice water to someone in Hell.” When Gates later arrived and heard about the comment, he was, naturally, enraged, because my partner Kara Swisher and I had assured both men that we hoped to keep the joint session on a high plane.

In a pre-interview meeting, Gates said to Jobs: “So I guess I’m the representative from Hell.” Jobs merely handed Gates a cold bottle of water he was carrying. The tension was broken, and the interview was a triumph, with both men acting like statesmen. When it was over, the audience rose in a standing ovation, some of them in tears.

I'm not surprised.

It's sad that he's gone and kind of poignant that he's passing at such a time that the American Capitalist is under such hatred and attack.

I want to see if I can find movie that was made about him now and watch it again in tribute.

It seems Google Video has the whole thing if anyone would like to join me.

TNT is honoring Jobs with a couple of re-airings of Pirates of Silicon Valley tonight.

That's Bender Bending Rodriguez as Steve Ballmer, btw. :)

While this is about Steve Jobs retirement, it's still relevant now in eulogy.

Man I love basic instructions. I think I've read the entire series 2 or 3 times now.

Man... It doesn't care what you've done for the world, or how many lives you've saved. It doesn't care if your were a great visionary, or a great leader. It doesn't care what the world thinks of you. In the end, with a raw efficiency that government only dreams it could emulate, it makes us all equal.

Cancer sucks.

God bless you, Mr. Jobs, and thank you for the future.
