How does bittorrent satisfy your 'spur of the moment' needs ?

Average decent-quality movie size: 2.5 GB
My average download speed: 3.1 MB/s
Time it takes to download and enjoy movie: 13 minutes

The only thing that can beat BT or any other P2P sharing is instant streaming. Oh, hey, uTorrent supports streaming uncompleted video files now!

If movie studios tapped into bittorrent they could make a killing. Just charge one cent per Megabyte.

This nonsensical technobabble. It's not feasible. (1) They can't "tap into bittorrent." I'm not getting my content from them, they cannot bill me for it. They can't even findout I'm getting it. (2) If they did provide a direct download service (based on data transfer amounts or not), Bittorrent wouldn't be the way to go. Bittorrent is a scalable network where virtually nobody gets their data from the original seeder after the first few downloads are complete. The whole point of Bittorrent distribution is that the other peers share the files, and the original uploader/seeder does almost nothing after the first download or two. The more people who start downloading the file, the faster the network gets. The provider wouldn't be uploading much at all, so they wouldn't have anything to bill anybody after the first few downloads. And nobody would download at 1 cent per megabyte...that's $25 for a 2.5 GB movie. They'd get their content elsewhere.

I am unwilling to go with illicit means of movie acquisition. I enjoy collecting what I do.

We just switched to DirecTV, we have the streaming only netflix, Amazon Prime. I use VizAnime and I am starting to use the free Hulu... If that does not cover me I will drive to the local redbox or blockbuster

Since I got a nice bonus from work I treated myself to a 46 in. TV for my room. I'm watching Netflix on it right now, it's pretty cool.

I don't know. I would never have ordered DVD rentals by mail, even if it had been available here. It's far easier and faster to go to a nearby rental place (RIP Blockbuster.) I don't want to rely on the mail for anything. And I don't know people who plan out their movie watching. If I am going to watch something, it's going to be on the spur of the moment, and immediately. I never understood the appeal of this service. Of course, Netflix never brought that service to Canada at all. Streaming is all they ever made available here.

That's kind of how I felt before Netflix actually, but between the brick & mortar video rental stores all dying and the ridiculous costs for renting movies from them I quickly ended up loving them, brick & mortar new release rental, $5/night. Netflix I was paying $18/month for 2 disks out so I was probably at the peak cycling 20 disks a month, plus streaming on top. The other reason I like Netflix and the disk service is anime, I never saw anime at a brick & mortar store and anime is still somewhat limited in streaming, though it's slowly getting better, there's a lot of anime on disks however.

This^^ Even Red Box @ 2 a rental would break the bank when compared to the number of series and movies I stream and have out (unlimited DVD aka 3x time).

Netflix reversed their decision!

Yup, I just got their official e-mail. So idiotic to make these huge sweeping changes and then be surprised when people hate that it's going to be more of a pain in the *** to use your service. I think Netflix has lost a lot of street cred with this kind of crap.

My brother works for Netflix, in the part that would've been spun off.

You probably don't really want them. Apparently, all that happens when you wear them around outside the house/work is get asked "Can I get a free account?"

That actually sounds like more fun than people running up asking for help with their mobile phone when they find out you work for their provider! :P~

I was hoping this would be so unpopular that they threw in free Blu-Ray service with Qwikster :(

It's certainly taking them a while this morning to ship my new one, but remember, there was a holiday Monday, so they may be backed up.

It feels like they've been a lot slower in shipping since August.

That's probably due to their depression of making all those horrible decisions. They probably just have a "curl up in a ball" half hour in the mornings and again in the afternoon, if they have any perspective.

I just got a notification that my last DVD was received. I dropped it in the mailbox on Sunday. Generally when I do this, they flag it as 'received' on Monday, when it's scanned in at the post office. Occasionally Tuesday morning. It's not normally this long a wait.

Additionally, when I get that email that my disc has been received, my next disc has already been moved out of the queue and into the 'shipped' area. It was still in the queue when I checked just a bit ago.

Right, there was no mail service on Monday, so it didn't ship until yesterday and they got it this morning. (same as mine). Checked just now, it has moved from the queue to the "shipping today" area. So unless they don't ship it today, it's moving same speed as it has been. :)

Yeah, nobody does. (Except the Native American Indians, right? Am I right? Here all week, etc) :)
