I know it's a tough spot to be in. Just remember... if meds turn your kid into a zombie give up on THAT med, not all of them. The right meds should make him feel in control and self-aware and more human than he's ever felt before... not like he's anesthetized and going though the day in a fog.

I was terrified of meds before I started taking them, but I'm very glad that I do now.

^ this. Speaking for myself, if I had access as a child to what I take now (Vyvanse, for the record), it likely would have made a huge difference. I know it certainly does now. But that's just me. For a lot of people ... I won't deny that these things are over-prescribed. But that doesn't have anything to do with your son, either. What other people do shouldn't influence your decision one way or the other.

My advice would be that if you have any suspicion of concentration problems -- which doesn't necessarily mean distractability, impulsivity, or hyperactivity -- find a good diagnostician who can perform specific tests and give you specific answers.

There comes a point beyond which a job is no longer merely "boring", "tedious", or "repetitive". Go too far down that path and it becomes punishment.

My current assignment doesn't feel like "work" anymore. It feels like I've been kept after school and forced to write sentences on the blackboard

That's unfortunate. With jobs there's two scales - "Do I make a good living" and "Do I love this work". You can try to overlap them as much as possible but it's very difficult to get both entirely.
