What a bogus holiday...can we get rid of this one yet? I know it's nice to have another bank/postal holiday, and for some govt employees having a day off was nice....but does anyone even "celebrate" Columbus day anymore? Did we ever celebrate it?

Never get rid of a holiday. Always make more of them. A day off work is sufficient reason for celebration.

For the record, yesterday was Thanksgiving here. I love working statutory holidays...regular pay and 12 hours off for sitting here doing nothing for 8 hours.

The Italians around here go bonkers for Columbus day. Parades, feasts, etc.

Columbus is rather barbaric compared to the metrics of the modern day. He lived in a different time though. I'm not saying only good things came out of his work. Most nations going back that far have some skeletons in their closets.

Columbus is a major part of the reason why all of us except pureblood American Indians are here. As far as national holidays go, that's actually a rock solid holiday.

Christmas and Easter are fancy, so are Yom Kippur and Eid al-Adha, but none of those are American holidays. St. Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day - these are not American holidays.

Columbus Day commemorates the Europeans discovering the Western Hemisphere. Like Independence Day, Veteran's Day, Memorial Day, Presidents' Day, and Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it actually is an American holiday.

Yup. Just because the guy was a Euro-centric ******* doesn't lessen his contributions to what made this country (you know, coming back and telling the world "Hey, there's some nice stuff over there, and lots of space").

And, there's a lot to be said for the notion that *everybody* in Europe was Euro-centric at the time, because they were pretty sure that there wasn't much else out there.

Well if you had given me 4 minutes and 38 seconds to plant my flag, I wouldn't have bothered you the rest of the day!

Not only do you walk into their house and tell them they no longer live there, but you insist that they be called an indigenous name from a country they aren't really from: "I don't care how much you protest, yes you are a Nigerian."
