I wish them luck and hope once they become a functioning country able to export goods, that the United States can work a partnership that benefits both countries.

Until then, not a single $ needs to go to them until they have their #%#$ together.

Either way, from a US perspective, it can't get a whole lot worse than the previous regime.

Just because they may have elements of Sharia law does not make them another Iran. A large part of the reason Iran is the way it is, is that they used to have a dictator we supported. Libya used to have a dictator we helped topple. There's a pretty major difference there.

I'm also not sure who "we" is supposed to be.

I guess as long as the new government isn't 'sponsoring terrorism', it's an upgrade.. for whatever that's worth...

I'm just glad a "massacre" was prevented.

Other than the Lockerbie bombing 20+ years ago, what else has Ghadafi been up to?

Don't hold your hand over your *** while you're waiting for it.

At least, not your right hand. By Islamic tradition, you are only allowed to **** on your left hand. Your right hand is for eating.

Hindi is a language, not a religion. You're thinking of Hindu, but no.

The command came from the Prophet Muhammed, but of course, most Urdu speakers (same language as Hindi, but written in Arabic rather than Sanskrit) are Muslim, so they would also follow the rule. http://www.straightdope.com/columns/rea ... left-hands

Good, then we have exactly zero reason to send them anything except a trade agreement.

Are you objecting to the oil companies that are currently bidding for various rights and contracts to rebuild the oil infrastructure? Right now that's already being decried as "exploitation" by the West (because obviously Libya can do it faster and better with its own technological resources!) or to taxpayer-funded aid?

No, and in fact I floated that idea earlier. But a private company making an agreement with a sovereign country for oil/resources isn't an issue to me. I have an issue with the government doing it. Hey we just bombed err liberated you, wanna talk about oil terms now?

I'm thankful the "kinetic military action" was successful in preventing a "massacre".

Oh come on, the Libyan intervention was pretty much entirely because nobody wanted a severely protracted conflict that would disable Libya's oil production for years. Bringing "freedom" and preventing "genocide" are just excuses used to sell the war to the masses.

I don't recall anyone seriously proposing that air power could prevent a massacre by the victorious rebels.

Not entirely. Getting rid of a complete ******* dictator is a decent secondary reason. Even if he's replaced by a new *******, that ******* will be our ******* and so he's likely to confine his assholean actions to his own shithole.

Ahh, the whole point of the exercise was to "prevent a massacre", but only by those forces Qghadaffy controlled, surely not to "prevent a massacre" by those forces we were helping? I think my point has been missed.

I'd say that the massacre that Qghadaffy would have indulged in would very likely have involved a significantly higher body count. I do not see any reason to think all massacres are created equal.
