I want to be excited for a new Zelda game, but it just doesn't feel the same anymore.

I grew up a Nintendo fan through and through, but I have felt abandoned by them as they decided that the non-gamer would be their target market instead of trying to keep competitive against Sony and Microsoft.

Part of me does want this game, but another perhaps larger part of me doesn't want to bother.

It may be due to the fact that I know I don't have the time for another epic journey (likely) with Link through Hyrule or Skyloft or whereever. Or it may be because my Wii has been relegated to a collector of dust on my entertainment center. When in the mood for gaming, it is almost exclusively my Xbox360 that will get the call.

I will try to get excited for this game, but I fear it's time has passed. I think I will pick it up anyway, but I can only hope it still carries the same mystique that I grew up with and became so fond of as a lifelong Nintendo fan.

Given that the Wii2 is projected to have more graphics power than either Sony or Microsof'ts products I dont think its fair to say Nintendo has vacated the field.

Means nothing if they can't attract third-party developers and offer them something (like, an audience). They haven't been able to do that since before the Gamecube.

*nod* and given that XBox 720 is only 2 years away on the far end, I think Wii is still a generation behind.

I'm not sure that's an accurate statement considering how Sony and Microsoft have both been ripping off Nintendo's motion sensor control scheme. For the past twenty years, the biggest innovations in controllers and their feedback has come from Nintendo.

Microsoft may not release another console. They can't saturate the second largest console market in the world and are losing ground to the PS3 in the United States. No matter how good a product Live happens to be, Microsoft might have a better time providing multiplayer infrastructure for everyone than continuing to produce hardware. Of course, I think that's a shame, since Sony releases universally bad platforms.

God of War and Uncharted are games you buy systems to play, though. And they need a united front to fight off retailers in an increasingly digital world.

I don’t believe this would ever happen, for no other reason than because it makes sense and is a great idea.

It would be nice to only have to worry about one console. But...things might stagnate if that happens. Maybe if Sony would release a dev kit that wasn't such a pain in the *** to use...

Anyway, I can't help but think of the Microsoft-Sony and Sony-Microsoft...thingers that were talked about here a few weeks ago. I think they were domain names? Though, the Microsoft guy said not to read too much into it...but of course he would say that if they were planning a mega console for the next generation.

Considering it's taken until end of the console generation to become the major selling point that causes Sony to not quite catch up to Microsoft, I can't say Microsoft got the **** end of that stick.

Big loss. I can't play movies that are $10 more expensive for a marginally improved experience.

The Zelda games are fun, but I feel that Nintendo pioneers hardware more than software. Their IPs, while good products, are very much the same thing over and over. Zelda's gameplay or mechanics haven't really evolved at all since OoT. Same for Mario and everything else. If they released new ones as often as CoD games, I think more people would complain, but it's been about 6 years since Twilight Princess. 2003 was Windwaker, the boat thing was new and neat(and eventually kind of boring), but the core gameplay remained unchanged in any notable way.

It's a little disapointing, I wish they would try something a little different. Handing Metroid to a 3rd party dev does not count.

Some people would argue that the consistent feel is part of the draw. Zelda is about the puzzles not the controls. We get a couple of different items every game as well as new twists on the classics.

I would argue nostalgia is the only draw that Nintendo relies on. The original Wiimote motion system blew (haven't tried the motion+) and they only had a handful of games that truly capitalized on the concept.

Seriously though, the wiimote is a non issue for me. I think they could have done more with it and with the console in general. However they did, as I pointed out with the above snark, once again change the conversation.

No, Sony and Microsoft waited a few years and improved upon it. Nintendo was in such a rush to get it out there that they didn't take any time to consider developing for it. Their 3DS suffers the same drawback, it's a great idea on paper but poorly executed. Sony previewed 3D TV goggles recently but they won't get to market until they are practical (or in Sony's case until the market has jumped the shark). I'd imagine somewhere in the bowels of Redmond some MS team is playing with a similar set of goggles to replace the Xbox. This while Nintendo is slashing prices and trying to prop the failed endeavour with another Mario Kart release.

edit: Oh and don't misunderstand me, I'm no Nintendo hater. Just disappointed with what they've been doing since the Super-NES.

I'd have to say that I enjoy the exploring aspect of the Zelda games. So much so, I never realized the backlash against the sailing portion of Wind Waker. It really gave a feel of an unexplored, wild world. My only real complaint of it was the fact that some of the islands were so small and almost not even worth finding.

The Zelda series may have not changed much at it's core, but it has always managed to draw me back in with the promise of a new world discover and explore.

I think that's what I like too, but I think they play it too safe all the time. I liked WW, but some people really hated the sailing (and cell shading). Sometimes it could get a bit dull when I just wanted to get somewhere.

What IP did they create during the N64 era? I only recall new entries in established IPs. And a lot of horrible games like Quest 64 and Superman 64.
