Never thought I'd be buying a house in Maryland. Didn't think the Mortgage would be $700/month less than the rent for on-base housing on Fort Meade...

I get to bid Picerne and this dump they call base housing adieu monday :)

Getting promoted to E6 and the BAH raise that goes with it was the final straw...~2100 for a 900 sq foot apt is maddening.

Wow, you've got to be kidding. That's ridiculous. With no down payment, here, you could pay ~600 for a 900sqft HOUSE. ~2100 would get you a 6 bedroom house with a pool!

Glad you don't have to do that anymore. Yay!

Privatized base housing takes your full housing allowance as your rent, so the higher your rank the more you pay for your apt.

My next door neighbor pays about $1100 for the same apartment ;)

Rents are high right now, in part because so many have been knocked out of the housing market. Also, in Ft Meade, there's a lot of transients(?) (people that aren't planning on being around the area that long) which jacks up rentals.

The real problem with the rent market is that BRAC brought about 60,000 more gov't employees here, so everything is renting for about 400+/month more than when I got here three years ago.

Doesn't bother me, I'm sick of renting anyways.
