To be honest I wouldn't believe them anyway. Lets say there was a ship that crashed and the government got possession of it. The implications for technology would be enormous cause anything that can travel a long distance in space would have to be advanced. Why give up that secret to the world? But then on the other hand this is the US government and keeping a big secret like that just doesn't seem possible for them.

I'm guessing it would worsen the economic crisis, weaken the governments ability to govern, and lead to a rise in crime. Conversely, it costs the government nothing to deny the existence of UFOs.

From a risk/reward perspective, governments should always keep everything a secret.

Looking at it from the governments viewpoint, here's no government benefit to be had by releasing any info at all. There may be benefit to the population at large, but if they don't already know, they won't be hurt by remaining in the dark.

Depends on what that alien species thinks is better. I imagine that random terror and ******* probing is unlikely, but conquering planets seems reasonably likely.

Of course, this assumes a unified species that somehow has species-wide agreement. I imagine any real alien species would be at least as varied and have at least as much internal disagreement, and a similar breadth of faults and virtues as our own (although not necessarily the same faults and virtues.)
