I got some Impulse 4G thingy instead of my old iPhone 3G.
I figure that change keeps you young...and I wanted to try something new.
So far, I'm frustrated because somehow my gmail address book is listed under contacts...so I have to go through 309 email addresses to find a phone number. I'm sure there is a way to stop that, (I hope), and figuring it out will give my brain something to do, haha!
Other than that, I think it's just going to take some getting used to.

Any cool stuffs suggestions? The only smartphone I've ever had was an iPhone.

I have lots of suggestions for android apps.

Log in with your gmail account. You can install apps directly to your phone from the website. It's a lot easier than installing from the phone marketplace.

Since you play guitar, start with "gStrings" (awesome Guitar Tuner)
I also use an app called "SoundCloud" which is actually a web service for sharing music/sound files. It allows you to record audio on your phone and upload it to their website to share. MP3 Recorder is also handy for recording, although I don't use it much any more now that I have soundcloud. My phone makes surprisingly good audio recordings.

For SMS, "Handcent SMS" is a great replacement for the default messaging.

"Dolphin HD" is a great browser. Supports tabs, bookmark syncing and saving, and has some nifty add-ons. I understand they had a security issue with their latest release, but I think it's been patched.

Other obvious stuff are the various book/reader apps like Nook, Kindle, Google Books, etc...

If you want to read forums outside of the browser, you'll want "Tapatalk"

I also have a bunch of news apps.
Yahoo News, News & Weather, msnbc.com, foxnews.com, engadget mobile, nbc news, etc... And any apps your local news channels and newspapers might have.

If your bank has an app you might want to put that on there (then again, maybe not).

Any social media apps. I don't use facebook or twitter much, so I don't have those, but I've heard that "Tweetdeck" is pretty good for twitter.

If you keep music on your phone, you might want to check out "PowerAmp". It's a really good music player app, although the new "Google Music" is out now, so it may work fine for you.

If you use Amazon's cloud services, you'll want to download the "AmazonMP3" and "Amazon.com" app to access your music from there.

For a keyboard, I use the default most of the time, but sometimes switch to "Swype". If you can't get it from the market, you can get the app sent to your phone by going to their website and signing up for the beta. http://www.swype.com

There are lots of fun/free games. We had a 'Paper Toss' tournament at work a few weeks ago. And "Airport Mania" is a fun little time waster.

Get the Opera web browser if you have Android. It's so much better than the default.

For the contacts thing, you can hit "menu" and do a quick search. Or, Android actually has really smart voice recognition. So if you hit the "Voice Search" app (it's a native Android app) and say "Call Nitefox" it is smart enough to find it in your contacts and call him (replace "Nitefox" with his real name, of course... unless you have him in your contacts as "nitefox").

I am a massive fan of the app called "Setting Profiles" by Probeez. It makes my smartphone an actual smart phone. It's an app that has all sorts of conditions you can set to enable different profiles. That's kind of a confusing, and very broad sentence but let me give you some examples of what I have it do for my phone.

If I am at the physical location of work, AND it is a weekday, AND it is during work hours, then my phone's ringer will be set to "vibrate only" and the media notifications sounds are set to "low." When one of those conditions aren't met (if I am at work on a weekend, or if I leave work) then my phone goes back to default.

When I am at home and it's during the time when I am sleeping, my phone turns off notification sounds, but keeps the ringer on.

When my phone detects headphones plugged in, it turns the media volume down to a certain level, so I don't accidentally blast my eardrums.

When my wife calls, it knows that she is different than everybody else and will override any "vibrate only" settings I have set for work.

You can have it detect physical locations by WiFi networks, GPS, or (and the best way) all the local cell towers around your location.

There is a free version of this app, but you can only have one profile. I need at least 3 or 4. So I spent 4 bucks or so and bought the full version. I have tried "Tasker" but have not liked it nearly as much. It is overly complicated and not as streamlined as this one. And it's more expensive, I believe.

Whenever I change phones or rooted ROMs, Setting Profiles is the first thing I install. I can't stand not having it, at this point.

Oh, I also forgot Barcode Scanner... I don't use it often, but when I need, it's nice to have it there...

I believe there should be a way to set your contact list to display only contacts with phone numbers. I don't have Froyo anymore so I can't look at mine, for I'm sure the interface has changed with Gingerbread. On my phone, it's Menu -> Display Options -> Only contacts with phones

Come back in 2 months and tell me how you get on with it? I'm actually kind of interested in how an iPhone user adapts to Android ;-p I've stuck with apple since the 2g, because I hated every phone I ever had prior to that that tried to be anything more than a phone.

If you find the apple tasty, maybe I'll have a bite and try straying too ;-p

My favorite part of Android right now are the widgets. I will still probably switch to iOS in a year when I get my renewal.

So far, I don't like it at all. Main problem is the touch screen...it's not as good as the iPhone and I have to press something several times sometimes before it will respond. If you don't touch it just right, it doesn't work. This is a real problem with the kbd too...it is very difficult to type a message on the kbd...accuracy with fingertyping on this thing is horrible. To the point where I just stopped sending text messages or using my browser or anything that requires typing on this thing. It's horrible.

Can you take it back and exchange it for a different model ?

iOS is the greatest mobile operating system and I can't wait to upgrade to an iPhone. Although I like the widgets in Android, as a whole iOS is better.

I have 30 days to trade in...unfortunately, the restocking fee is even more than what I paid for the phone.

Looks like I'm stuck with it...if only I hadn't bought that stupid fridge... Boy, do I make the worst decisions in the world, or what?

The only way to not make bad decisions with technology is to do a large amount of research, which isn't worth it unless you enjoy it.

I had originally gone to get a replacement iPhone, which would have cost me $0, but the salesman said they didn't have any and talked me into buying this one....I figured I'd see what all the hype was about android phones since I'd never had one and wanted to not be "old and stuck in my ways"....turns out, it sucks and I made a poor decision. I should have left the store and driven across town to check the other store for iPhones. Live and learn.

There shouldn't be a restocking fee for a device that isn't functioning properly. If you can demonstrate that the touchscreen has responsiveness issues, they should let you choose another model.

Just threaten to switch to another carrier. :p

The only android phones really worth owning IMO are the Galaxy S II models.

Well, I took my phone back to the store, and I was very polite with the salesman who sold me the phone. I explained what was wrong, listed my issues with the phone, and he told me it sounded like a calibration issue.
He swapped it out for a Galaxy S and dropped the restocking fee and dropped the upgrade fee as well.
I love ATT. I have yet to have a single issue with them that wasn't resolved with their customer service...this makes the 4th time in 5 years that they've fixed something for me that I didn't have to pay for.
