Do you frequent them?

I have one two blocks away every saturday, pretty awesome finds each weekend. I had never been to one prior to a couple of years ago when I first moved to where I am, and now I love em.

Fridays during the summer there is a small one (dozen or so vendors) at the hodpital so I usually stroll through when I have an appointment or a prescription to pick up. I just found out recently that they also have a larger farmer's market on Saturdays. If I'm feeling better by Saturday, I plan to check it out.

LA has dozens of them. It's pretty insane. I don't usually plan to go to them, just kind of happen on them and see what they have. One (in Eagle Rock) would cater to Filipinos, for example, and had raw peanuts, lots of exotic Asian fruits, etc. An Elvis impersonator, too, but I don't think that had anything to do with Filipinos.

There used to be two in downtown on separate days, one at Pershing Square, another at 7th and Fig. But they're doing construction at the latter, so I don't know where that one went. But it was fun to get some shopping done during the day, or pick up some fresh fruit for lunch.

But, yeah, they're fun.

I've found that Farmers' Markets have become more about "other stuff" than fruits and vegetables. Last one I went to had more stalls selling stuff like kettle corn, cotton candy and churros, than produce.

There are quite a few farmer's markets around Atlanta, but with so many of them popping up they've either become dull and bland, or they've deviated so much it might as well be called a flea market. It's gotten to the point where the biggest farmer's markets are big Korean owned grocery stores in all but name

But at least the fruit are cheap and they seem fresher than a regular grocery store's.

I like to go to them, but don't get to as much as I would like. I try to avoid local grocery type markets that sell nothing but produce, because they will sell stuff imported and try to pass it off as local. They also get their local stuff from large commercial farmers, instead of smaller home grown farmers. We have a few commercial growers in the area, that mass produce for large companies and allow local "grocers" to pick over what is left.

I also like to buy from people selling on the side of the road. This time of year we get satsuma sellers in trucks, that pick up produce from either our coastal region or Louisiana farmers. North up the major highway, you can find tons of trucks selling pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and peanuts.

There are two good ones near me year round, one each, Saturday and Sunday. During the warmer months there are two others one on Tuesday and one on Wednesday in Downtown Sacramento. I used to go to them regularly, now its not that frequent but I still enjoy shopping at them occasionally.

Yes, they have become littered with non-farmers setting up baked goods, ready to eat, and coffee shops, but you can avoid those and walk right to the produce.

The one food cart I will still give custom to is an Indian lady who makes great Samosas. Her Chole is excellent too. Yes, Chole, not Chili.

I frequent smaller farm stands a lot more than the larger farmer's markets, but we do go to the bigger ones whenever we visit my mother. They have a lot of nice ones with Amish and Mennonite farmers near her. I consider small family stands to fall into the general category of "Farmer's Market."

Heh, my nearest farm stand is probably about 50 miles from here, and that's an oddity.

Id love a good farmers market where I live... the only one I know of in the area is all full of arts and crafts and no veggies...

Farmers markets in Chicago are seasonal, but I hit 'em when I can.

I finally made it to the larger Farmer's Market at the hospital a couple of weeks ago. Picked up some fresh dill and cilantro, some green beans, tomatillos, red bell peppers, fresh oyster and shitake mushrooms, honey whole wheat bread, a dozen organic eggs, some baby bok choy, and some almonds flavored with jalapeno and some flavored with lemon.

The next Saturday we went again and picked up some more honey whole wheat bread, some flaxseed bread, some portobello mushrooms, lemon pepper lox and salmon jerky, and some raspberry flavored and garlic flavored almonds.

I found out the last outing that this Farmer's Market is open year round now so I will definitely be patronizing it during the year to get the fresh, organic produce that they offer.

I pay for three shares (capital contribution, ALOL) to a communal organic farm run by a few of my left leaning friends, and for my contribution I take what I want for the entire family from the duration of it's ability to exist, and then I do the same with the next produce anti-business they try to start. I've been doing this for years. It's win/win. I get unfathomably under-priced produce in as large a quantity as I want, and they get to keep trying to learn the same much needed lesson in economics, which they are still refusing to understand. I'm more than happy to keep eating their vegetables.

All the local ones tend to be on days where I have to work (weekends). There's only one nearby that I know of that isn't, it's Thursday evenings, but it's a college run one and isn't very good.

I love to go to them when I get the chance though, there's usually awesome stuff to be found.
