Eh, kid's fine and learned a valuable lesson. And there's nothing that can be done to help anyway, besides turning back time and teaching him that cats are pointy and sproingy and that hitting them is a bad idea. And perhaps letting him deal with the consequences of his actions IS helping him in the long run. He's lucky he didn't do that to a large dog.

People who own cats aren't used to taking care of things.

We let our son know when he is too close to one of the cats' faces or if he has cornered one of them. Only once, has one of our cats lashed out at him and it was a very minor scratch.

As much as we warn him, though, there are still times he seems to test it and we have to step in quickly, not grab our camera and see what happens.

The person who filmed this is an idiot. A cat that was obviously on edge that close to a child of that age was not a moment that was worth filming. Put the camera down, *******, and protect your child.

I disagree, Foamy. Any child that has that much lack of impulse control to beat a cat like that deserves what he got. It's a great "natural consequences" life lesson and would not step in and defend my child from a cat defending itself. I've been around lots of cats and they almost always give plenty of warning and when they lash out it's just enough to enable the cat to get away.
If I happened to have my camera in my hand already (which very well may have been the case) I'd have probably filmed it too.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about life lessons. But, given the chance to prevent one that could cause harm (especially one that could end with the loss or damage of an eye), as a parent, I would be remiss to not step in.

He can learn life lessons in cases where greater danger is not involved. Last night, for example, my son and I were playing with his blocks on the hardwood floor. Just near the edge of the wall was a small hole just large enough to stick a 2-year old sized finger into. I warned him not to, and he went ahead and did it anyway. It stuck for a moment, just long enough to "scare" him and I helped him get it out. I used that as a follow up "teachable moment"

If my cat is hunched and on edge with Sean sitting with his face that close, I would not sit idly by to let the cat teach him that lesson.

Kate, that's crazy. I'm all about life lessons, but I'll forgo the ones that could leave my child without an eye.

It's not crazy. Did you see the way that kid whacked that cat? In all my years around kids and cats, I've seen scratches but no one getting an eye out...that's a little melodramatic. In a normal, family-cat/angry kid situation, all that's going to happen is that the kid gets a small scratch or two....anything other than that and you've got a cat that was never meant to be a household pet in the first place. And I'm certainly not going to kill a cat because my tantrumy kid decided to beat it and got scratched in return.

It's your kid's eyes. Just don't come crying to me when he's permanently in pirate mode.

Also, if it's acceptable for children to get eyesight altering life-lessons, it's acceptable for animals to get sentience altering death-lessons. The first is far more cruel than the second.

Ry, if you are talking about animals that, unprovoked, attack a kid, then yes I'm all for the animal death penalty. But, like I said, with a cat, you can expect a scare to the kid and a small scratch or two and thats about it. Hardly worth killing an animal over defending itself, but that's just me...and my kids eyes are just fine, thank you, as are the eyes of generations of kids before him who have learned not to take their anger out on their cats.

My cat just jumped on the back of an office chair, opened the freaking shutter on the window, and nestled in between the shutters and glass. It was like watching the raptors learn to open doors in Jurassic Park. I'm simultaneously proud and unnerved.
