So...on this leveling/skill discussion:

1. Does the system only allow for one skill up per skill per level?
2. If so, are there any non RP, non timesink reasons or other limitations to not advance every skill every level?

Thanks

1. No, the system allows you as many skill ups you want per skill per level, until you level. Unlike previous games in the series, there's some protection against over leveling skills. (I have not figured out exactly how the math works here, yet).

2. You need less skill gains than you have skills total to level, so that shouldn't really be an issue. The One Gain Per Skill Per Level is the maximize the exp gain, because exp gains are tied to skill increases.

Every time you get a skill increase, your total level exp raises. Any skill increase will do it, and you can raise your skills as much as you want. However, apparently exp gain from skills is not linear and to max everything, you have to pay a lot of attention.

Right. And exp gain has diminishing returns for a given skill within a level.

Also, if you have a corded 360 controller, plug it into your PC for this game.

I've been using my wireless controller with the adapter.. one of the best decisions I've made. Although, hotkeys are nicer with a keyboard.

Yeah, the hotkeys are a lot nicer with the keyboard, but over all controls are so much better with dual analog sticks for this game, especially if you're a sneaky type.

You can plug X-box 360 controllers into a PC? Can you just go and buy one and do that, or do you need the actual 360 as well for software updates or some crazy **** like that?

Just go buy a USB 360 controller (corded, about $39.99 retail nation wide, get the Microsoft official one) ...

Then you plug it into your PC like any other USB device. It will download drivers and work. Skyrim specifically supports the controller and has a built in profile. You can, however, use one with any pretty much any game, as it's a Direct Input device.

Alternately, you can also get a wireless controller and the wireless USB receiver. That ends up being about $50-60 more expensive if you don't already have a wireless controller.

Khross and Kaffis:

So you're saying that a wireless USB receiver, such as one that PCs use for wireless mouse and KB, can be used as a receiver for the wireless Xbox360 controller. The same controllers I have two of already for my 360?

Trying to be as clear as possible on this because I had no idea that this was an option. I may be able to scare up a spare USB wireless receiver from around. I'd love to try out Skyrim on PC with the 360 controller.

A specific Xbox 360 adapter is needed for wireless play. ANY corded 360 controller will work out of the box.

Third party wired PS3 controllers work out of the box, too. We have a corded 360 controller, but I've also noted that a $20 third-party USB PS3 controller works on PC just as easily. Of course, the 360 controller is nicer, if you have one.

It's only wireless that are complicated.

I’ve rolled a Nord with a focus on archery and then shield/axe. The bows can be quite satisfying I have to say. I went far enough into stealth to get 3x sneaking damage. Watching guards ragdoll off high ledges is always a treat and taking the slow-mo when zoomed in perk makes it easier to kill more guys before they discover you.

The other night I snuck up on three dudes, just peering out from the top of a staircase. I took one out. A clean shot through the neck and retreated back in into the hallway and draw my next arrow. As the second guard reaches the top of the staircase, I let loose and it catches him in the chest and in slow motion his sword falls to the ground as he sails backwards off the stairs with his arms stretched forwards. Time returns to normal. I notch another arrow. The final guard appears just as I finish drawing it back. Time slows and my next shot takes him in the shoulder. He goes to his knees in pain. My next arrow sprouts from his ear and ends his suffering. He tumbles down the stairs.

Awesome.

That's good to know. I'd only get the wire controller anyhow; I despise wireless controllers.

Wireless controllers have come a long way in recent years. I've been very pleased with the Xbox 360 controller's performance.

If black and white tv's were good enough for Jesus Christ, they ought to be good enough for Skyrim.

It's got nothing to do with the older ones not being nearly as good as new ones. I just want a wire connection. I also do not like having to put batteries in my controller.

How about the play and charge controllers that have a rechargeable pack, and you plug them in once in a while, while playing? 98% wireless and no batteries. I don't understand the benefit to wanting a wireless controller just because it has a wire.

Eventually the recharge packs I originally bought stopped holding a charge, but that was after several years of use.

Also, my horse got the killing blow on a dragon. o_o

Wires have their place, and DE's complaint about changing batteries is one of the most valid reasons to want a wired device. It you're running a signal less than ten meters, it's more efficient to use a wire. Wireless doesn't become the way to go until the signal power loss from distance traveled along the wire is greater than the increased power consumption of whatever devices you're using to transmit and receive signals.

Wire connections are not interruptable in most of the ways wireless ones are. The rechargeable battery pack would be better, but I still wouldn't want to **** around with it. Then there's the above-mentioned thing about how you can just plug the wire controller straight into a USB port but the wireless ones you have to.. well, **** around with.

I just like my **** to be plugged in. I sit in a chair right in front of the computer to play anyhow, so the wire really isn't a problem.
