Phe's a big fan of the books. She sez that that trailer looks right (i.e. respectful of the source material and appropriately capturing the spirit of the work).

I also read the books because I had a friend that wouldn't shut up about them, and they are pretty entertaining. The trailer looks very true to the source material.

I really have little to no desire to see this movie (but I'm taking Phe to the midnight showing if she reads 11/22/63), but I have to say, from everything I see, the soundtrack will be amazing. The Civil Wars, Neko Case, Decemberists, Secret Sisters, Arcade Fire...wow.

The first book was good, second and third not so much.

The biggest problem is that there is literally no way to correctly put the point of a couple scenes in the book in a PG-13 movie. One scene in particular is extremely important both for the whole first book and most of the rest of the series, and there's no way they can do it properly without a solid R rating.

I'm still curious to see how it turns out though, I enjoyed the first book enough to give the movie a try.

I agree with that. The first book kicked much ***. The second was... not as good... and the third felt rushed and incomplete.

Its one of the problems I have with first person narration. Unless you have an omniscient narrator, or you cheat, if something happens to said narrator, events will continue to happen 'offscreen'.

The end of Mockingjay was a lot like that.

Imma try to write a full review sometime today (if I can squeeze it in), but short version: It's good. Very good. Incredibly good. Go see it.

It was pretty good. I say that as somebody who has not read the books.

The first book was mediocre and the rest were awful, I can't see myself seeing this movie until it's on Netflix.

Good as a movie, ok to poor as a retelling of the book. About what I expected honestly.

One out of two reviewers on my favorite public radio station today didn't like it. Had some problems with lack of depth or something. Not sure we're gonna rush out to see it, even before that.

I loved it. There were a handful of scenes that shied away from the epic that should have been and there are a few things I wish I'd gotten to see. (The bread, for one.) But other things were so much better than I expected them to be.

We enjoyed it. However, I thought it lost a little in the translation from the book because the internal conflict and inner dialogue were missing. I wish they'd found a way to put some of those details onscreen. Much of it could have been done in just a line or two of dialogue.

Yeah, the shaking cam was **** ANNOYING. Although it's probably mostly due actors not being that great at choreography. At least not believable choreography, when they're making mincemeat of each other.
