Today I went to go get Sean in his crib and he was being a typical sqiurmy kid and I asked him for a hug when I picked him up and he just wanted to get down and screamed "No, No," in my ear. That is not the part that made me sad cause that is just what 2 year olds do, but of course we have to remind him yelling in ears is not acceptable. The part that made me sad was that I put him back down in his crib and said, "We don't scream at mommy in her ear that way, I was going to put you down, but you yelled at me. He proceeded to flop on his blanket and fuss,so i just walked away and then he said, "hate you." That just sent chills down my spine and I stopped dead in my tracks. Now, normally he will throw tantrums being two years old and he sits on the step when he starts to scream and kick or he stays in his crib until he calms himself down. He is really good about calming himself and he handles it really well. Today, was normal as usual and yes it is typical two year old behavior and we usually put him where he needs to go when he does this and give hugs afterwards, but this time I almost fell over. I know he is only two and he dosn't understand the impact of what he said, but i felt the impact like a pole was smacked into my chest. I took him out of his crib and took him in our bedroom and put him on the bed and told him Saying that hurts mommy, he was still squirmy as usual, but whenI asked for a hug he gave me one and it was better, but I am sure that was the first of many times I will have my feelings hurt by my own kid.

I think it was more shock that got to me and I know he doesn't understand the ramifications of what he said being 2, but still the words hit me hard.

I am at school now and the kids have yet to come in and to them I am hard as a brick, no matter what they say to me. They could call me a B**** or tel me to shut up and nothing phases me, but when it is your own kid. Wow. Ok kids coming in must stop crying now.

I'm sorry you had to experience that, Oonagh.

Get even. Spit in his food tonight. ;)

I'm sorry, Oonagh. *hugs* Your son loves you and he was probably just repeating something that he had heard somewhere without really knowing what it meant other than that it's just something to say when you are angry.

I'm sorry to hear that Oonagh. My wife had an experience like that recently with our 5 year old - except in the grocery store.

Saying "I hate you too" probably isn't a good response, I imagine.

"You're the reason mommy drinks."

I'm sorry, Oonagh. That's one of the more unfortunate phases of growing up, and it lasts until somewhere in the early 20s.
