While I don't plan on ever making use of a Netbook (what's likely to be running this), I'm really excited about the road Google is going down here.

I see this as a step backwards. None of it stored on my computer? How am I going to run games on that? Where's my hi-def video that is far too much bandwidth to stream? Where am I putting my 500gb of downloaded music and documents and video?

I fully intend to get a netbook, the moment they come out with one that can run WoW...but it's gonna have Windows on it.

But Chrome OS can run WoW on any notebook -- it's basically just streaming video from their massive servers!

Taly, I'm pretty sure you aren't the target audience. I doubt the OS driver base will be robust enough to support gaming hardware anyway.

So spend the money on something that is $200 cheaper than a macbook, and runs software with a UI and capabilities like Windows 98, that doesn't work without a high bandwidth internet connection.

Where is this an improvement, in *any* aspect?

1. I won't even use my computer if I don't have broadband internet, anyway.
2. The price of hardware from third parties has nothing to do with the OS.
3. The UI already looks great and this is still in alpha stages.

To be fair, Lenas, Google basically keeps its products perpetually in beta, so this is more like a beta, anyways. ;)

$200?

Since when does Apple sell $500 macbooks? Netbooks are $300-ish now, they'd drop with google OS on them.

Cheapest one I seem to be able to find are $1000 from Apple.

A cursory google search sees $240 Acer Netbooks at the lowest price.

A massive, open source Thin Client network hooked to Google Technology? We're talking about disposable, commodity computing: cellphones with a little punch. We're not talking about netbooks or low-power laptops. We're talking about 7-11 Notebooks that cost less to buy than the iPhone in your pocket.

You got some weird type of deal, or an older model, I presume. The ones I'm seeing are $199 (16GB) - $299 (32GB) + a three year contract package from Rogers Communications...which have some insane $65/month minimum rate.

I think Screeling has been breathing in too many African American mold spores.

Can you even get a solid state drive for $240? I thought Chrome OS wasnt even going to support spinning platters?

Last I read was talking about ChromeOS hardware listing at $799 - could well be that Im reading the wrong sources though.

No idea about the spinning platters thing, but there's always flash memory.

The versions of Chrome OS online right now clock in under 1gb. Don't need a solid state drive :p

9. Chrome OS devices are going to be very inexpensive. Sergey Brin mentioned that Chrome Netbooks would cost something similar to Windows Netbooks. Um, no.

It isn't just that $25 in OS cost that the netbook makers will be saving. By going to a low capacity SSD, say starting at 8GB, instead of a hard drive, you are losing weight and price. Then consider that with an ARM chip, you are paying a fraction of what an Atom costs - which is already very low for a PC.

You won't need as much RAM to run Chrome OS either. Just being a kernel and a browser saves a lot on memory overhead. 512MB of RAM might be all you need. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see a sub-$100, base model Chrome OS PC, from a major vendor like Dell, HP, Acer, ASUS or Toshiba.

Yeah, a sub 100$ netbook running Google OS would be sweet. Definitely useful. Also, it will likely make all those old dusty garbage laptops useable again as netbooks. I really like the simplistic UI they're going for as well.

I'm not so much excited for the Chrome OS as I am the ensuing competition between Google and Microsoft. I see the consumer as being the ultimate victor in that fight.
