An excerpt: “Her first novel, Restoree, was written as a protest against the absurd and unrealistic portrayals of women in s-f novels in the 50s and early 60s. It is, however, in the handling of broader themes and the worlds of her imagination, particularly the two series The Ship Who Sang and the fourteen novels about the Dragonriders of Pern that Ms. McCaffrey’s talents as a story-teller are best displayed.”

On her blog, she offered this advice for aspiring writers: “First — keep reading. Writers are readers. Writers are also people who can’t not write. Second, follow Heinlein’s rules for getting published: 1. Write it. 2. Finish it. 3. Send it out. 4. Keep sending it out until someone sends you a check. There are variations on that, but that’s basically what works.”

So very sad. Her books have been such a part of my life that it's hard not to think of her as one of my oldest friends.

The Ship Who Sang remains one of my thought provoking favorites. Looking through a list of her works I was amazed that wasn't the first one to pop into my head.

Challenge fate. Make the most you can out of your life no matter what hand you're dealt. Fall in love, do whatever it takes to make it work.

Shitty. She certainly influenced me, and will be missed. She should have been given more intellectual credit when Eragon was published, the same way that Tolkien was.

When I started reading SF/F, she was one of the few authors in the kids section. Read a lot of her stuff until high school and broader horizons and adult themes were available.

Pern was a second home for me to retreat to in my mind for a very long time. McCaffrey is often incorrectly categorized as a fantasy author. The Dragonriders series is science fiction, not fantasy. Regardless, they're worth reading for fans of either genre. I started with "Dragonsong" when I was 13 years old, and while they should probably be read in order of publication, that story was an interesting and appropriate starting point for an adolescent girl.

Somewhere dragons are trumpeting in mourning. Bring light and warmth with you between, Anne.

To expand on my sadface:

One of the few books I read until it disintegrated (and I owe someone a lot of money over it, I suspect) was a hardcover copy of three books together, of the Dragonriders series. I don't remember which three they were, but I read that book raw.

I also liked the Tower and the Hive series. I only read two books of that series, sadly. I will probably have to see if I can get them on Kindle or something.
