I thought so too. It's interesting how they left that out.

I got 9 kills 1 death in a plane! Woot. Not counting stuff I disabled as well.

I've been flying planes for the last two - three days straight. :D

Flying over your base just to observe isn't 'base rape'. Get over yourselves idiots.

Wait what? Aren't you supposed to fly around and blow stuff up?

After you attack targets from a plane you need to travel far to reposition, and their base is part of the map. Also it's important to know if enemy planes or helicopters are taking off, or if tanks are leaving the base.

I'm actually getting kinda sorta OK at flying the chopper. Funny enough, I think it's easier with the mouse and keyboard than my joystick.

Still need the joystick for the jets though...

It takes a LOT of practice to get down flying. It took me over 12 hours in the plane until I could start getting kills. I haven't done much with helicopters yet since I've been enjoying my plane too much. There's so many things going on at once and you have to know what to pay attention to, in addition to aiming well.

People get upset at using aircraft to.. attack critical enemy locations, like a base? What the **** do they think aircraft are FOR?

A lot of people aren't very good at the game and don't understand that you can use freelook from a cockpit to spot enemy planes. You can also look at the skies before you jump into the damn plane. Nevermind the two AA guns at every base.

And this is a surprise to these idiots? Have they never heard of radar?

I suppose this attitude is largely the product of Hollywood and the video game industry which always portrays modern air combat, or any sort of sci fi space combat as taking place at absurdly short ranges. Let me guess.. you can't engage BVR with missiles, radar on your fighter is an "upgrade" and the game does not actually model the difference between SARH and ARH guided missiles.

Does the game model larger SAMs than Stingers? Bases are defended by AA guns? What about.. larger, radar, guided SAMs?

I suppose I'm asking way too much for a shooter game to model an air defense network.

The AA guns can upgrade so you can switch between rounds and missiles. You don't get missiles until you have enough experience. All guided missiles act the same way. I have not observed a difference between Stinger missiles and the AA gun missiles. The lock-on range for missiles is quite short, which is why I only use my fighter's gun in air to air combat.

edit: fixed sentence

Unbelievable. I really wanted to play this game but it sounds like it would just annoy the piss out of me. If they want you to only use guns for air-to-air combat, why didn't they just make it a WWII game in the first place?

The guns are extremely powerful in air to air combat if you understand the correct place to aim (hint: rounds don't travel at the speed of light). Missiles are easily thwarted with flares or the ECM jammer. Also your plane recovers from damage to half health if you select the fire extinguisher upgrade, so missiles don't do enough damage to take out a target before the plane heals.

The game is lots of fun despite inaccuracies in realism. I thoroughly enjoy using my plane's gun to shoot down other air targets. I've also killed soldiers on the ground with the plane's gun. It's interesting because I spotted them through the laser-guided missile camera (which zooms in at 3x or so in black and white), but since I can't shoot these missiles at infantry, I have to switch to the gun.

The plane heals itself because it has a fire extinguisher? :spit:

At least they got leading the target with the cannon correct. Modern missiles really aren't easily spoofed by ECM or flares and such anymore though. I think I'd have to stick to infantry combat just to avoid having an aneurysm.

Yes, my plane has sustained direct hits from a dozen missiles before over time and still remained in the air. Everytime the plane goes on fire, you can use the extinguisher and it heals back to half health. I used to not realize this, so I'd land my plane to make repairs, but now I see there's no point. I think even without the fire extinguisher the plane heals back to half unless it is in flames.

Here are some of the unlocks:

Slot 1: belt speed, air radar, proximity scan, stealth, or 1-second lock on for laser missiles
Slot 2: flares, ECM jammer, or fire extinguisher
Slot 3: Air to air missiles, dumb missiles, laser guided missiles

I always go with the air radar, ECM jammer, and laser guided missiles

dumb missiles? laser-guided air to air missiles? air to air missiles are an unlock? Radar is an unlock?

The laser-guided missiles are against ground targets. Air to air missiles are the second unlock, I believe. I forget the proper name for dumb missiles, but I meant they are unguided rockets. Your plane can fire about a dozen of them before it needs to reload. (by the way, you have unlimited ammo for everything, a departure from previous Battlefield games).

I hate these infantry men who do nothing but sit in the middle of the forest with a Stinger launcher. Assholes.

It's a video game, fun comes before realisim. Accquiring a target before you can see it then firing a missle is not fun. They are thinking in terms of gameplay, not realisim. That said, they're not entirely getting the gameplay portion completely right... The unlocking the good stuff business is annoying and I hate that my missle can't be locking on while I try to shoot him down. The unlock system is dumb and some of their maps are waaaay broken. Metro on conquest is a **** and I shouldn't be able to die from someone flying that MAV thing around and bumping into me. :x

I am still enjoying it, but some of the decisions are questionable.

Wwen you should see the clusterfail that MW3 is. You can get sniped by a shotgun from across the map, they let you put assault rifle scopes on sniper rifles for super-fast scope/instagibs. You can dual-wield machine pistols with rapid-fire attachments which let you hose out entire rooms with spray.

Ugh, there is no balance at all in that game.

The balance in Battlefield 3 is actually pretty good in my opinion.

I haven't been able to get into the new one but the previous versions did a very good job of balancing classes. I thought they screwed up a bit last time when they gave medics the LMGs but they've corrected for that.

The recon class has the weakess toys IMO. Even the MAV thing is really only "super effective" in Metro, where people have less room to avoid it. They buffed the SOFLAM a bit though, but I haven't tried it yet. I have no one I play with too coordinate it's use. Other than that, most people are useless as snipers. There is an effective way to use them that helps your team, but most people try and find some hidden spot and try ineffectually to snipe people, ending up with a score of 500. YMMV.

It's annoying when people say I'm hacking. Can't they just accept that they suck? I have about 50 hours of flight time now, it's not like out of the blue that I usually win air fights.
