Ok finally getting a chance to post this.

Friday after Thanksgiving was the opening day for my deer hunt in AZ unit 34A, this area is in southern Az from nogales to north of green valley. First thing Friday morning we spot some does not far from the house so we spent a several hours watching them hoping they'll lead us to a buck, no such luck. Wouldn't have done much good if they had they stayed to close to residential areas to give a legal shot. Over the course of the next few days we worked areas all around the Santa Rita mountains, Saw lots of does both muley and white tail.

Our real fun actually happened on Sunday I received an email from a friend who was scouting for someone else that he had sighted some bucks in Josephine canyon between Amoto and Mt Hopkins. Hopeful for a chance to shoot one we head that way. We get to the main road leading in to area we spot border patrol truck by the side of the road so we stop and ask him if he had seen any bucks in the area, he hadn't but advised us they were trying to track a group of illegals last seen a couple miles south of his position, and asked us to call if we saw them. Well not thinking much of we said we would, as we were headed at least another 5-6 miles east of there before we would be turning south, and that sane people wouldn't be hiking through that area as it's seriously tough country to cross.

40 mins later we get to the spot we want to park, we hike down to the end of the ridge that gives us a vantage view of two canyons converging into one, we have could visibility in all directions. My partner takes the north Side of the ridge and I go to the south, I find i nice tree to sit against, I get the gravel and rocks cleared out so my but cheeks have a somewhat comfortable place to rest while I'm glassing.

No sooner then I get settled in I hear my partner call out "hey you got your GPS" my first thought was to shoot him, as I was looking forward to little bit of quite while we looked for deer. I call back to him "yes, what the ****" he then tells me he's on the phone with BP and needs our exact location. I give it to him and head over there to see what wtf is going on. Eight Illegals carrying garbage bags heading up the Valley wall about 300 yds north of us.

10 mins later 2 BP trucks come rolling up to us, and we spot another one on the ridge ENE of us. They ask us what we saw and which way they went. we pointed it all out to them and told that we thought they were heading for the stock tank on the north ridge which is fed from a well. one agent commented "why didn't did wing one, we wouldn't tell". we had some banter about seasons, bag limits, and trophy mounts. 2 agents got in to on truck and headed for the stock tank, The other 2 agents decided to take the express route on foot. Yep down a very steep hill across the valley and up the other side, this was about 300 yds as the bullet travels, on foot this would be about half a mile about 15 mins later we watched them crest the the top of the ridge.

We decided to watch the fun for a bit, as hunting in that area was blown to hell anyways.
When we finally decided to leave we encountered our runners they were about 3.5 miles from where they left their truck, they let us know that they had them boxed in in the wash just east of us. On the way out we counted six BP trucks and four BP agents on Quads. we talked to a couple others and they all they had the illegals trapped.

It was interesting to watch in person, and these agents seemed like they were really having fun doing this. In a way I can see it, you get good toys for the country side and get paid to spend your day chasing an elusive quarry.

I would also like to note all of the BP people we met over the course of the weekend we very courteous if not friendly, sadly I didn't get names to formally compliment them.

Sucky part is having a good hunt zone disrupted.
Sadly our hunt time ended with no bucks bagged, but still an enjoyable time in the wilderness.

My only question though where is my Junior Border Patrol badge.

Of course the BP agents were having fun... they were only hunting... THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME!!! I mean, you were just hunting some silly old deer ;)

Good work on your part though.

Well those deer were more elusive than the Illegals.
Sometimes have to think who's smarter

I'm envious you are allowed to go after a buck without first having bagged a couple does.

It's been at least 10yrs since I've seen any doe tags offered up in the the hunt application listings, We used have choices for antlered muley, muley doe, antlered white tail, white tale doe, and a very limited any deer option. Az doesn't have the over population problem of some other states. Our game and fish department. is very active in areas of population management, whether is based on maintaining, curtailing or promote populations of the different species in the state.
I believe they are working on increasing the deer population overall, more does equals more breeders, one buck can bang a whole lot of does.
you have to apply for a hunt for each species, you select five choices, choices are arranged by dates and areas. so for instance this year I put in for 1- Unit 8 muley late hunt, 2-unit 9 muley late hunt, 3-unit 10 Whitetail mid season, 4-unit 9 unit 8 late hunt, 5-unit 34a mid season.
It works the same for elk, Antelope, havelina.
I only selected unit 34a as my last choice as I have a small house in Rio Rico that is located inside the hunt area. It was a given if didn't get drawn for my other choices I would get a tag for 34a, very few people like to hunt down there due to the immigration situation there are often tags left over for the southern AZ units.
Since I didn't fill my Tag I contacted G&F and they said they would allow me (for a small fee) to exchange my tag for the mid December hunt in the same unit as they have about 150 tags left over.
It's a complex process involving draws, hunter points, unit, and time of hunt. It all has to do with animal populations and regions.

Hey DE,
I've got the truck number that the agents were driving, anyway to find out their names so I can formally compliment them on their attitude and professional behavior?

Btw how do I get my Junior Border Patrol badge

I'm all the way in south Texas, unfortunately I can't really go inquring what agents were driving a specific truck on a specific day in Arizona. However, if you call their station and speak to a supervisor, they could most likely go back to that duty roster and know which agents you were talking about.

You can ask him about the badge too.

I really hope he was just kidding. If not, that is pathetic.

Outside of that, I'm sure it was very interesting to watch.

yes they were just kidding, fun friendly banter. Overall the professionalism of the agents out strips any leo, I have ever dealt with.

Though don't kid yourself if we had witnessed any firearms directed towards our location or the BP agents, I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

Too bad you don't live over in south Miss........over here, the rednecks drive up and down the ditches in cars with the windows removed, and let the dogs run the deer until one crosses the road. Shoot them from the car. And then, they cut the backstrap and leave the rest to rot.......on to the next deer. They don't recognize limits and laws :derp:

But for honest folks......we have so many deer you have to be careful when driving at night. I live just a couple miles outside the city, and they are always walking across my yard at night. I could easily bag a few out my back door (some do around here).

I haven't Hunted in Miss. But I have in AL. Legally, I wound up with more meat than I could realistically use, when I got home I gave half of it away to family and friends an still had a full freezer.
I've got a job coming up in TX. a friend of mine is planning to take me pig hunting when I'm there, as many as I want. I'll be Taking advanced orders from people who are willing to pay the costs to ship it back.

Cool, glad to hear it. Both on the kidding and the professionalism.

And I completely agree with your last sentence. I would have as well.
