The Glade 4.0

Thought we had a thread on this movie, but my meager searching didn't reveal it.

Finally saw it tonight and I have to say I really enjoyed it. I've seen quite a few Muppet movies since Jim Henson's passing, and while I did enjoy them, they didn't feel like they had the same "spark" or "spirit" as the ones that were made when Henson was still alive. I don't know, it's hard to explain. On top of that, the Muppets mostly haven't had a movie that let them explore themselves, they usually played roles in someone else's story (A Christmas Carol, Treasure Island, etc.).

This movie though, certainly has that same spark and spirit that Henson's Muppets had. This is the first Muppet movie in decades that really feels like a Muppet movie to me. I am glad Jason Siegel was given a green light to do whatever project he wanted, and that he wanted to do a Muppet movie.

In true Muppet fashion, this movie is for kids while still maintaining a hefty amount of belly laughs for the adults. The newest character introduced, and one I approve of and embrace fully, is '" 80s Robot." And, in true Muppet fashion, there is a lot of emotion laced throughout. The Muppets have not been relevant in years (in the movie's plotline, which somewhat mirrors real life) and have split up and gone their separate ways. Society has all but forgotten about them and TV execs don't believe that their brand of charm and humor would resonate with today's market.

There's a reason why this movie is getting a crazy-high score on Rotten Tomatoes. You would have to have a pretty hardened heart not to enjoy this movie. I fully recommend it for everyone of all ages. I believe that Jim Henson would approve of this movie.

Haven't gotten out to see it yet, but am totally looking forward to it. Am a fan of Muppets, Jason Segel and Amy Adams.

It felt very self-indulgent to me Jason Segel's (who I love) writing was... awful to me. I took my niece and two of my nephews with me. They liked it, but talking to the parents afterwards we all agreed that it was a tad depressing and felt very much like a last hurrah for the Muppets before the green felt is mothballed forever.

So of those of you who have seen it, how many of you can tell the difference between the voices vs. the originals?

Because to me, the voices are recognizably different.

Kermit was verrrrry close. Everyone else was close but off with the most off being Gonzo for me.

Ironically, David Goelz is the only original voice actor in the movie. And he voices Gonzo (and Scooter, if memory serves).

The voices I thought were pretty spot-on were Fozzie, Miss Piggy, Animal, and Dr. Teeth. The rest were close, but more noticeably different. Not enough to detract me from the movie though. In order for the Muppets to live on, their voices do have to change somewhat. And doing a perfect Kermit is actually a lot harder than one would think. Most of Henson's voices are actually fairly difficult to replicate exactly, Ernie maybe being the easiest. Which is why I was pretty shocked when Dr. Teeth opened his mouth and sounded really good (oddly enough, a different actor for his voice than the one who does Kermit).

That might explain it, everyone else sounded close but a bit off but Gonzo sounded very old so I assumed they found some old guy to replace the original.

No, he retired back in...2002? I think it was '02.

Not according to IMDB, where he has voiced characters on Sesame Street as recently as 2008, and voiced Yoda as recently as 2011 (for a Disney park ride.) He did a muppets short film in 2007. He's currently working on a voice for Pixar's Monster's University.

It doesn't really look like he retired, he just didn't do this movie. Oh well...
