Female Online Gamers Have More Sex

Gamers rejoice: female online gamers are more social, happy, sexually and physically active than their non-gaming counterparts, according to a Harris Interactive survey of 2,000 U.S. adults. Gaming is a stress reliever for most of these women (61%), while 16% game online to connect with others.

This GameHouse infographic, first published in VentureBeat, compares the characteristics of women who game online and those who don’t. The study found that 55% of online gamers are women and 45% are men, although the infographic only details findings about women.

Female online gamers are more social than their non-gaming counterparts. Forty-one percent socialize at least once each day in person compared to 31% of non-gamers. They’re also more active on social networks, with 88% of gamers socializing online at least once each day compared to 71% of non-gamers.

More than half of all gaming women (64%) are either married or live with a partner. Fifty-seven percent have sex and 38% have sex at least once a week. Non-gaming women are less sexually active, as 52% have sex and 34% have sex at least once a week.

Thirty-eight percent of female gamers, compared to 28% of non-gamers, have children under the age of 18. The most popular time of day for gaming is between 8 p.m. and 11:59 p.m., possibly after many moms have put their children to sleep.

Are you surprised by the positive behaviors, such as being more social and happy, associated with online gaming?

I doubt gaming is the cause.

Has anyone considered that maybe most of these female gamers play games because their boyfriends/husbands are?

Some maybe, but not all or probably even most. Our own demographics likely reflect this.

I'm not at all surprised by this considering how my only serious relationship came about.

I think they forgot to split that down. 55% of online characters are female of which 50% are manginas and 5% are women.

I don't know about anyone else, but I prefer playing female characters because I'd rather stare at a female all day than a male.

I'm curious as to what the study is considering online gaming. Is playing Bejeweled on a Flash site "online gaming?" Alternatively, what're the numbers for Second Life these days?

Also, It's interesting to note the correllation between young children and the 8pm prime time. I wonder if the high percentages of online gaming, whatever that entails, among women may be because it's an "at-home" activity they can participate in after their kids go to bed? I can see that being a draw, particularly if we're not just talking Flash games, but rather ones with social contexts.

Concerning those studies? Yes, they count all facebook and casual stuff as "Online Gaming". That's why the female numbers are so high.

Yeah but that's kind of irrelevant. The point isn't that these chicks are hardcore raiders, just that they're playing some kind of social game online.

The study actually suggested that the social aspect was important for only 15% of the female gamers IIRC.

I find it interesting how women are slow to take on anything related to technology, or have an interest in the news and progression. It's partly why they will long have a secondary role in society, since today it is the tech world that is dominating. And yes I am generalizing here.

Bingo. I've seen a study on this before. There are more women who play online games than men. Most of us, however, inexplicably play cards or other such multiplayer games. Only a few are legitimate gamers.

When I first met my wife and she mentioned she liked video games, I was thinking "Yeah right. Like what, Mario Party?" But then she mentioned games like Counter Strike, Soul Caliber, Knights of the Old Republic, Half Life 2.... I knew I struck gold.

Majority of girl 'gamers' i know, get online, flirt and get dates.
Majority of true girl gamers I know, don't act like girls online. (It's annoying to be hit on when you're trying to pvp)

I've been to several guild meet ups over the years, and the girls they contained have always been divided into 3 groups of females. True geeks, geek curious (mostly gf/wives of guy geeks) or skanky geek wannabes.

Afraid not SuiNeko, no wannabe status for you, you're as much of a geek as the rest of us, and I don't recall you being particularly skanky.

I usually play a girl character, but I don't flirt with guys... that would be beyond weird (from my perspective, not a universal one).
