Decided recently that I've been on the sidelines long enough with regards to Scotch, so I paid a visit to our local beverage mecca yesterday. After consulting with the resident Scotch guru, I picked up a bottle of Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban:

A 12-yr old Highland single malt that's been finished in ruby port casks to add hints of dark fruits and spice.

Is very nice :)

Having finished the Glenmorangie last night, I picked up a Laphroaig 10-yr today:

This one is ... wow. Either it's going to take some getting used to, or I'm never going to enjoy it. Not yet sure which.

Experimentally.
With both bottles, I began by drinking it neat, to experience it without dilution or introduction of foreign flavors. I've had the Glenmorangie once or twice with ice, several times diluted with varying measures of water, and most recently have tried adding small amounts of club soda to it.

I'd recommend Japanese Whiskeys and Bourbons then. Japanese Whiskeys blend with water, and soda won't honestly do much for a decent scotch except add carbonation. Likewise, because carbonation has its own distinct taste as far as your tongue is concerned, it tends to either mute or negate the complexity of a whiskey's palette.

That said, not liking Laphroaig is pretty much akin to not liking scotch. While it is strong, different, and extremely smoky, it's a standard.

Look for Glen Roth, A bit pricey but well worth it. As far as the Laphroaig it's an Isley scotch which I find to be much harsher on the pallet. it takes some getting used to.
There are some fantastic Japanese whiskeys out there.

Point the first - Japanese Whiskeys and Bourbons - I'll take under advisement. Request for clarification, however - are you referring to "Japanese Whiskeys" and "Japanese Bourbons", or to "Japanese Whiskeys" and "Bourbons"?
Point the second - soda with scotch - I did some independent checking and have found that soda is typically only mixed with blended scotches, not the good stuff. Thanks for the tip.
Point the third - not liking Laphroaig is akin to not liking scotch - while I am inclined to disagree, because there's such a broad range of flavor profiles, it seems to be a moot point, as the Laphroaig seems to be growing on me. At least I didn't throw away $40 on a bottle of something I don't like.

Expect that from the Isley Scotch. They grow on you.
Japanese can't call any of their whiskey's Scotch, various laws protect this, just like Champagne. But there is a wide assortment of Scotch style whiskeys available that are surprising in quality, and very enjoyable.

The Macallan 12 is beyond good; it is the gold standard mass distilled single malts. It is far and away the best mass produced whiskey exported from Scotland to the United States.

As for Japanese Whiskeys, I'm talking about Japanese Whiskeys, and I am also talking about Bourbons. Bourbons come from Kentucky. There are a few middle-Appalachian sour mashes of note outside Kentucky, but typically you wanna stick with Bourbon for that particular type of whiskey.

Necroposting a bit ...

November's Scotch was a bottle of Speyburn 10 yr that I picked up largely because it was cheap. It was drinkable but not terribly likable, so I think I might simply avoid the under $20 range in the future.

This month's Scotch is the Glenrothes Select Reserve, which I'm already liking quite a bit (thanks, Leshani).

It tastes a bit harsher on the palate, without the mellowing and flavor complexity that I taste in the other Scotches I've tried. So far, the ones I've enjoyed most were the Laphroaig, the Glenmorangie, and the Glenrothes. The Macallan was a bit too sweet for me, and the Speyburn seemed like it needed a few more years in the cask.

Macallan 12 is very good. As a result, I can't keep it in the house for long. Gets pricey to try to keep really good scotch in the house, because, well, I drink it.

I very much want to sample the Lagavulin 16 someday, but other than that I believe my Scotch experimentation has pretty much come to an end.
I now know what I like and where to get it.
