The Glade 4.0

It's a Samsung Galaxy Ace (cheap one, I'm knew at this) with Android 2.3.4. I have no idea what I'm doing with it and have never used Android. I figure stuff out quickly, though.

So what neat things can I do with this? What apps/games should I download? How can you tolerate typing on these things? It's SOOO SLOW to type on these tiny little onscreen keypads.

Learn to Swype. I'm pretty sure it's pre-installed with Android these days.

For virtual keybard, I use Swype. Once you get used to it, it's very convenient. I also recommend Barcode Scanner, which allows you to scan (and create) QR codes. I also have Amazon, Amazon MP3 (cloud player), and Amazon Kindle. Then I have store apps, like Best Buy and Newegg. Having a weather app is good, too, like weatherbug or weather channel.

I don't really have any games on my phone, mostly because I'm running insanely low on onboard space.

Check out appbrain on your normal computer, it'll allow you to look through the apps and then dump them all to your phone when you decide what to keep. I'd also recommend phone silencer.

Being the geek that I am, but having absolutely ZERO experience with Linux/Android, I have now rooted this device and have superuser access. I read that if I partition the SD card with an ext4 partition, I could convince the phone to use that partition as extra system storage (because the Ace is limited to about 200 MB system storage, relying on microSD for storing all its apps).

Okay, I've partitioned this little 16GB microSD card with an ext4 partition (when I rooted the phone, I also installed ClockworkMod to back up the ROM before I upgraded anything). Damned if I can convince the phone to even acknowledge the partition is there, though.

Not sure why you would ext4 in that situation. You don't need journaling. You sure it didn't say ext2?

no idea. And to be fair, ClockworkMod doesn't give much choice, and with no linux boxes I have no way to tell whether the card is formatted ext4 or ext2.

You could install Cygwin and check the partitions using fdisk.

to be fair, linux command line in a windows environment works a whole helluva lot easier / better than using dos commands, and can add a lot of functionality.

First off, I don't know what your plan is like with your carrier, what your data rates are and things like that. (Or, maybe you just bought the phone and have no cellular plan.) It's in your best interest to set up your smartphone to use available wireless networks whenever possible. There's no reason to be pulling internet data off your cellular carrier if you're at home, for instance. Likewise, you probably don't need to be doing that at work, either. In fact, most places will have free wireless you can leech.

You like to play D&D games online. I would recommend trying to find some sort of e-reader app. Smartphones aren't terribly good for reading books, but they're great for looking up a feat or a spell.

In that same vein, you should be able to find a free app that stores character sheets. They're not great, but they do at least let you see stuff like attack bonus, armor class, saves, etc.

Dicerolling apps are available cheap or free for the iPhone. I can't imagine Android is any different.

You like the satellite radio subscription that came with your new car. There should be an app that lets you get it on your phone.

This is akin to someone arguing for automatic gearboxes. It's easier and lets you do the basic chores. It is inadequate for complex work. The Linux CLI is obscure, user hostile and immensely productive for Getting **** Done, once you understand a sufficient number of the components and how to chain them.

Also, to be fair to Windows, it's actually reasonably secure these days out of the box. The problem is, the first thing people do is turn UAC off because it annoys them to be notified that things are asking if they can dick around with their computer.

I won't disagree with that, as it's at least 50% of my motivation for wondering why ext4 was being used in the first place. While ext4 works better on removable media than ext3, I can't think of a file system more stable and unobtrusive than ext2. That said, there are times when you want to use journaling on removable drives; a smart phone just isn't one of them.
