If I were to make a guess, it's because the SD card's ext partition gets treated as a system partition, rather than removable media. It also contains swap space. Journalling makes it far less likely the data on it becomes corrupted or orphaned. The microSD cards in these things are obviously not designed to be treated as highly portable.

Journaling on a non-removable drive makes it less likely to become corrupted, journaling on a removable drive is a guarantee it'll become corrupted.

There is no good reason to journal removable storage media. There are reasons, sure... none of them good ones.

IF it's a requirement in this case, it's just an indication that this is a hack to do something and not a professional implementation.

I just gave you 3 extremely good reasons to enable journaling on removable drives.

All drives are, ultimately, "removable." What people generally use the term for is portable drives that are frequently swapped, such as USB thumbdrives, external drives, or SD cards. But once you implant an SD card in a device that is never, ever coming out again, why still treat it like a removable drive? At that point, it might as well be a solid-state hard drive. Well, that's the wrong terminology. Not "might as well be." It is just a solid state hard drive.

I didn't know about the partitioning thing. I'll probably try it today and let you know how well it works for me.

I've almost got this working.

God, I hate being a total noob again.

Insofar that it's solid state storage, it's not an SSD. It's reads aren't fast enough; it's writes aren't fast enough. It's the last part that gets you, by the by ...

You're still writing to large portions of that SD card on a regular basis. You don't want journaling for those areas of the SD card; and I'm not sure how well Android phones handle multiple partitions. You specifically don't want journaling anywhere the data is transient. The situations I mentioned are ALL situations where the data rarely (or never) changes.

You could give me what you consider 3 extremely good reasons to run with scissors too, that doesn't mean that it's a good idea.

Removable media will be removed (by definition), and you don't write cache something that can be removed without flushing the cache. Don't journal a filesystem if you have write caching turned off, you'll just double the writes.

You can have whatever policy you want for your own systems... you can argue 'till the cows come home, but if anyone says having removable media with write cache enabled is a good idea, they're blowing smoke.

It is WORKING.

Had to root the droid, install a couple kernel mods, partition the mSD card with three partitions (Fat32 14GB, Ext2 560MB, Linux Swap 515MB). Downloaded A2SDGUI from Android Market, and it is now good to go.

Internal system storage is up from 180MB to 640MB. Total RAM is up from 285MB to 800MB. And I still have 14GB of regular SD card storage (The vast majority of apps and data can go here anyway).

Nice. I haven't had time to play with it on my phone. I look forward to having more internal space for my apps.

You have no idea. I eventually took the plunge and upgraded the stock firmware (to CyanogenMod 7.1 RC2.2)...which was a good idea, but wow what a learning curve. Also, hellahard to put swype back on after upgrading. (But...TouchPal is the same thing.)

I've got Cyanogen on my phone, only problem with it is battery draw, need to tweak some things to get back to normal.

The independent android developers do a great job of filling in the holes and making these devices preform.
