There's this funny thing about conjunctions and relative pronouns, particularly when they appear in subordinate phrases: the relative pronouns on both sides of the conjunction, especially "or", must refer to the same antecedent; that's called parallelism.

In particular, you'll want to read that second phrase. "Society" is used without modifiers and in the lower case; as such, "society" refers to the totality of human existence. That's every person on the planet. It's "society" in the broadest sense. "They" refers back to society, but implicates the plural nature of its constituents. Taly quite literally is talking about destroying the notion of class and social hierarchy here.
