Follow the Foxes

Skyrim’s foxes aren’t just adorable mini-wolves that don’t attack you. They’re actually guides to cool stuff, and every one will lead you to a location or secret you haven’t discovered yet if you follow it long enough. So if you run across one in your travels, maybe don’t shoot it in the head with an arrow and skin it, for once. Keep it in your line of sight and see where it goes; it’ll even stop and wait for you if you get sidetracked/attacked. Someone told me a tale of how a fox walked with her all the way to the top of the Greybeards’ mountain. Just her and the fox – battling the harsh winds and fierce snow on a lonesome quest to reach the top and find [spoiler]. This might be the least likely buddy-cop comedy of the decade, but I bet it created quite the sense of isolation and camaraderie on that cold mountain.

You wont look at those cute little guys the same anymore after they lead you through a forest, deep river, or up a snowy mountain, risking their lives to show you a secret.

So, some time after obtaining the Wabberjack, I was wandering around in the middle of the wilderness, minding my own business when an old woman appeared shouting "Wabberjack, Wabberjack, Wabberjack!" Nearly scared the piss right out of me.

Wow, I had no idea about the foxes, I just thought they were there to make the world seem more alive. Now I'm gonna be stalking foxes for days.

That's just stupid ...

Nice. I will have to give that an in depth test. I used a ton of the original oblivion tweakguide stuff.

You'll have to click through, because it comes with lots of pictures that I'm not going to transcribe to quote the article. But Rock, Paper, Shotgun have taken the time to rob an entire town blind, and the results (and captions) are pretty amusing.

I beat this tonight. Well, as much as you can beat a game that doesn't actually end. I completed the main story, I guess. Pretty amazing game, but the main quest seemed a bit rushed. Probably because I did some things and got a certain thing before I ever got to the part of the quest that needed the certain thing earlier in the game.

I've heard that happens a lot.

little frustrated with the number of bugged quests I've come across

The white phial - had a briar heart in my inventory--game didn't update when I looted one, now the quest point is stuck on a dead, empty corpse. Because the Briar heart is a quest item I cannot take it out of my inventory to give BACK to him, nor can I empty them out of my inventory. Looting other Briar hearts has no effect.

Locate the Power Source of Something-or-other-ruins (misc quest) just outside the dungeon where you have to connect all the beams of light--there's a dragon wall there--it half-tries to give me a dragon word (and the quest update spot is right there) but I stand there, the quest doesn't update and the word swirls at my screen at about 1/4th strength and I never get it

One of those Kill X dragon missions--as soon as I get there the backwards flying dragon bug manifests and the dragon contorts, and takes off across the world at Mach 4, in reverse before burring itself in the east-wall of the world (outside of my ability to climb), like some sort of epileptic Decepticon on PCP.

Several dragon walls if I move in-and-out- of word-giving range in rapid succession, give me all the words (but bug the related walls)

Mercifully the most recent patch fixed most of my quest issues (White Phial still bugged)

I thought the level cap was 50 or 51, but I just hit 52 and am on my way to 53 so not sure now.

Level cap is 81. Or something. It was talked about earlier in the thread.

I'm not sure why, but I've started over two times already. During my initial playthrough I was just trying to get a feel for the game and didn't get too far, plus I wanted my character to develop in a different way. The second time, I probably got through about half the game but again wanted to tweak my character a bit and focus on different questlines. I guess I'm trying to prolong the experience, and hoping for patches that fix all the quests.

A sidenote, the game clearly favors melee characters over both sneaky types and spell-casters. I like playing an archer/thief/slight mage type (a ranger!), although I don't use any melee weapons or a shield, so I tend to get my *** kicked if I let a tougher mob get too close.

Spoiler:
I'm now on my third time playing through that first ascent up the 7000 steps, at a pretty low level, and I never fail to get killed in two hits by that first snow sabre cat.

I never had a problem as a 100% archer with sneak. I pretty much 1 shot everything towards the end from stealth. On my second game, I was playing a melee two hander type character and I would get rocked fairly regularly where my archer just yawned his way through the game. Then again, I might just suck at Elder Scrolls melee.

Spoiler:
Get a horse. Those things are like mountain goats. I didn't even realize there was 7000 steps up to the graybeards on my first character. I scaled the mountain on the south-western slope. Thanks to that horse. Again, it's like a mountain goat. It can climb and stick to surfaces that defy reason.

I kicked the game up to the highest difficulty level, and at level 52 with all archery perks, +168% bow damage from armor enchantments, maxed smithing and a glass bow fully honed, (It shows a base damage of 368 I believe) It takes me 2 sneak attacks to kill a Druagr Deathlord. I think I managed to take on 6 at once (while they were chain shouting at me--that was the most annoying thing) while on my way to engage Alduin.

I think I can push my bow damage up to 400-500, (need one more alchemy perk before I try) by maxing my Fortify Enchantment potions, enchanting a new set of Alchemy gear, then repeating the process-- then building a set of smithing gear.

The process is mostly tedious because of a lack of places to put things. (I like Honeyside as a house, but lack of storage there sucks. In fact, all of the houses suffer from a severe lack of storage. I liked the mansion in Solitude but it was too far from shops. I liked Breezehome but no enchanter meant it got quickly retired. The house in Markath was too far away from most shops as well (though had the most storage so far)

I'm bugged so I can't do the Winterhome house quest (can't solve the murder because murder never comes)

Well, I'll be finally getting this on Christmas. I hear there's a mod that allows the game to use more available RAM. Anyone able to point me to it?

Not sure if this is what you mean, but the game was actually just patched yesterday to allow that:

Quote:
An incremental update, 1.3.10, is now up on Steam that adds the following:

* Support for 4-Gigabyte Tuning (Large Address Aware)
