...have been found?

Physicists announce the latest results from the proton-colliding experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) including tentative evidence for the existence of the Higgs boson

Quote:
The ultra-shy Higgs boson may have finally shown itself at the LHC. Both of the main detectors, ATLAS and CMS, have uncovered hints of a lightweight Higgs. If it pans out, the only remaining hole in the standard model would be filled.

Even more exciting, a Higgs of this mass, about 125 gigaelectronvolts, would also blast a path to uncharted terrain. Such a featherweight would need at least one new type of particle to stabilise it. "It's very exciting," says CMS spokesman Guido Tonelli. "This could be the first ring in a chain of discoveries."

It's funny to me how it takes $5,000,000,000 to figure something out in physics.

Is $5 billion too much to figure out how the universe works?

Depends on whose five million dollars we are talking about, and what else it might have been used for.

Billion.

It was a collaboration between France, UK, Switzerland, USA, India, Russia, Canada and Japan.

On a global scale $5B is nothing. I doubt it could have been put to ANY better use.

It's far worth it. We are exploring past the limits of what we know about the universe and reality.

We are banging rocks together. Very small very fast rocks and watching pretty sparks. Watching with very sensitive "eyes" but we are still banging rocks together.

Yes Elmarnieh, and at its core, wine is just old grape juice polluted with yeast infection byproducts.

You can reduce anything to its core unattractive realities. Foamy and Oonagh having once produced an expensive ignorant feeding and pooping machine are now eagerly making another one, and are quite happy about it. You would think they would learn from past experience. It will take a generation for these devices to turn a profit, if they ever do.

I'm still very happy for them.

The particles in the LHC are either gas or plasma phase. I don't think you can call that banging rocks together, as rock implies solid phase. You might wish to revise that to say "blowing really hard" instead of "banging rocks together."
