I thought of some things you may want to change upon entering game world...

a) enable area effect loot

b) seems graphic settings default to lowest; I immediately changed to highest. *hugs new computer*

c) Shift-CTRL + F = FPS (lower left corner); you will have to do this every time you enter game world

d) hmmm... there was one more I was thinking of but I'm at work atm. hmmmm

Profanity filter, if that's your bag.

Accept your ORE imporation on one of your characters.

Fiddle with chat tabs. (I can't speak for anybody else, but I always make a tab that's only private channels and server announcement channels with no combat spam -- group, guild, and tells)

Enable auto-loot (which is a separate option to area effect loot) if you desire. This one's optional, though; there's zero reason not to enable area loot.

Turn on additional hotbars if you desire them.

Remap keys if you prefer.

That about covers it for my first login habits.

Got my email at 6:22am CST this morning. A nice pleasant morning wakeup call!

My recommendation for early players: If you want to reserve any special names you like, create a bunch of placeholder characters ASAP with those names. Don't even bother picking the right race/class/looks, as you can delete and recreate later. I made sure 5 of my common names are reserved.

thought of a few more...

*click on the quick travel point objects to discover bind points. This way when you use your quick travel skill... only those that you clicked on (discovered) will be available, although the system is smart enough where you will always have one bind point to travel to for whichever planet you are currently on; typically the airport/starport).

*speaking of which, always try to find the local bar/cantina so you can find that bind point. This will allow you to port there at the end of a play session and be in a rest area which will allow you to gain rested experience.

*every class gets a quick regeneration skill starting at level 1. Bioware wants you playing not sitting around waiting for your health bar to rise.

*everyone should get qty. 2 newbie med pac at level 1. Click on 'I' for inventory to see what is there... just in case (I know you shouldn't have to use them but...)

*whichever skill you place in the #1 slot will be your default skill. When you right-click with your mouse to engage enemies that skill will be the one that fires/is used.

*Under User Interface options there are two - Show detailed Item tooltips & enable companion comparative tooltips, that I would recommend. These are great for deciding which weapon or armor piece is an upgrade and for which toon. You really should love your companion as much as you love your main character. *hugs Corso*

Awesome, I did not know that and it may come in very handy someday. It might be even more useful if a healing ability can be slotted there so you can right-click on friendlies.

I had the companion comparative tooltip during my first beta weekend, but it wasn't there during my second one. I thought it was a non-optional feature that they'd simply removed (or having trouble with). Thanks for this tip, too :)

If you log out in a cantina or your ship, you earn rested experience. Rested experience is a pool of experience that doubles the experience earned from killing NPCs and monsters, but not experience from quests or discovery. It's implemented so people that don't play as often can still feel like they accomplished something because their exp gains are increased.

It's 100% unnecessary for this game because you level so god damned fast. I mean, honestly...level 21 before finishing Dromund Kaas is **** retarded.

There are, but it's not exactly the leveling speed that is allowing them to be that high of a level. It's a bug with the PvP rewards giving way more exp than intended coupled with the fact that there are barely any people actually playing resulting in very quick PvP matches(that are ending prematurely at that but still giving the full bugged reward) letting people power through levels. Kinda fail.

Word from Bioware says that according to their metrics, no one is close to 30...but that doesn't stop people from complaining about it. There have been a few screenshots of 30+ characters floating around, but there's no way to tell if they are from beta or early access. I haven't gotten in and my brother's not home so I can't really check to see what the real story is, though. I wouldn't put it past any developer to try and cover it up by saying it isn't happening, but right now I don't have any evidence it is actually happening, just what people are posting about on the forums with sketchy screenshots that may not be from live at all.

My experience in the 2 beta weekends to which I had access was that the leveling speed was actually pretty fair. It took somewhere between "a few" and "several" hours to level up to 10, even after having done so twice previously, and getting to 19 in the span of a single weekend required some pretty serious time investment. Compared to the leveling curve in WoW vanilla, it was leisurely; compared to the current leveling curve in WoW, downright sluggish.

Yeah, but no. Especially when I leave the capitol worlds at a level that outlevels the next two planets. I could literally hit Tatooine after Dromund Kaas on my most recent beta character. That would skip both Balmora and Nar Shadda.

Should be Ord Mantell to 10, Coruscant to 20, and Taris till 25 or so yeah?

Should be Starter to 10, Capitol planet to 16-17, Balmora/Taris until 21, Nar Shadda to 23-24. The very first character I leveled had this path. Then they jacked the exp gain and I was hitting 20-24 before leaving Dromund Kaas.

I hit 23 in beta on Taris, and it was starting to get a little tedious.

On the last character I played, I was 26 and still not done on Balmora. Was doing the bonus missions. The exp gain gets even worse when grouped up because you get half of the exp from a bonus quest again when another person in the party completes their bonus quest. Which is annoying as hell.

Also, one more note: I recommend hitting the space port on your starter world after a few levels so you can jet up to the Fleet and pick up your gathering skill(s?) early. I'm not sure if Archaeology or Slicing will provide any opportunities on the starter worlds, but I was able to Scavenge off most of the Strong or higher droids on Tython, and I presume Bioanalysis would find the Strong wildlife similarly productive.

Gathering nodes doesn't require a companion, so you can use it before you get access to yours. Knights can even send their first one out on some missions or crafting errands before getting off planet; I know Consulars and Smugglers get their companion pretty late in the process, so you'll pretty much have to wait until you're actually done with the starter world to do more than gather with those.

However, I got my gathering up to the mid-20's, and dug up enough materials to skill my cybertech up to the second tier of recipes and get blue mod recipes reverse engineered from about half of my first tier, all without setting foot on Coruscant or spending money on missions (well, except for the mission I sent Qyzen out on to make a piece of droid gear to thank Furio for some augments he made for me).

In addition, just visiting with the crafting/harvesting/mission trainers on the Fleet to get their codex entries got me most of the way through level 5, lol.

Good point. I consistently waited until I'd hit lvl 10 before doing this, but I made a point of visiting everyone b/c it's free XP.

Oh, I should add that I've heard that, until you get your companion, you can't access the crew skills window to drop a skill. I haven't personally verified this, but you should talk to your intended 3 crew skills' trainers first, just in case, as you'll learn the skill by talking to them if you're eligible.

During the stress tests, I had no trouble clicking on the trainer and then selecting "Cancel" from the pop-up. Have they changed that at all?

For healers, don't forget to enable your focus and focus key so you can quickly heal your companion or heal target without changing your target. Just be aware that I had my focus target drop at random last night so just keep any eye on it and redo. Also, the focus target portrait would occassionaly turn into a black square.

I can say that archaeology does indeed come into play on both coruscant and dromund kaas. Not so much in the beta (as most nodes would show up on your minimap and in game, but you couldn't "mine" them). But 95% of those seem to have been fixed.
