Quote:
Signatures of names like Mickey Mouse and Adolf Hitler are being considered valid on recall petitions of Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker as long as they are properly dated, a government board indicated Tuesday.
Suspicious signatures will be noted, but reviewers on the Government Accountability Board will be looking primarily to see whether the signatures are accompanied by a Wisconsin address and signed during the appropriate time, according to WISN12.

“We will flag them, but we will not strike them without challenge,” said board elections specialist David Buerger, when asked whether Mickey Mouse’s signature could count. He added that in previous petitions, Hitler’s name was only struck because the address was in Germany, not due to the name itself.
Those seeking to recall Walker must gather 540,208 ballots by Jan. 17 to force an election on the matter. Organizers had 300,000 as of Nov. 28.
Walker’s efforts to restrict collective-bargaining rights for public union workers in Wisconsin have attracted the ire of progressive activists in the state.
Liberal activists first targeted six Republican state senators in recall elections this past summer, causing two Republicans to lose their seats. Despite their campaign to wrest control of the upper chamber from the right, Republicans still hold control over the state’s Senate.

Unsurprising, especially in light of the Indiana 2008 primaries.

While I understand your position, on the flip side, but I agree that this board should only be able to strike names based upon very limited conditions without any basis for subjectivity.

Let the two opposing parties to the action bring objections to specific names based upon subjective criteria, where the dispute and protest is open and public.

Granted, Mickey Mouse is a 5 nines flag, but what about J. Prufrock?

One would assume it would be pretty easy to cross reference the petition and a list of registered WI voters.

From my reading of that article, being a registered voter is not a requirement to sign the petition, only a resident of the state at the time of the petition.

Then cross list to the DMV

Ayup, that's my point.

I believe the individual in question is a minor in New Jersey who was taken from his parents by Child Services, at least in part, for giving him that name.

My grandfather used to sign people's paychecks with Mickey Mouse and Adolf Hitler to see if banks were paying attention.

My dad's cousin once made out a check to the "Infernal Revenue Service". It was sent back, with a demand for a new check.

I didn't know you could even write out checks to the IRS. I've always been instructed to write them out to the US Treasury.

I'm not sure if Mickey's primary residence is Anaheim or Orlando, but neither is in Wisconsin.

Wow, must have been a pain in the *** to work for. I think I'd be pretty pissed off if my paycheck was not cleared because my boss signed it "Mickey Mouse".

I can just imagine the overdraft fees and bounced checks that would have resulted in my 20's if my boss had pulled that.

That's the thing. The banks used to clear them. They did it every time. He used to do it to catch the banks sleeping on the job. It led to a lot of conversations with my grandfather chewing out bank executives.

Back then, you also didn't have your money available until three days after you cleared the check. So, you wouldn't have been getting overdraft fees because you wouldn't have been "floating" checks that you knew you didn't have the money to back up on the hopes that your paycheck would hit on Friday with direct deposit.

Finally, if you did have a check bounce, I'm sure he would've issued another one with his signature on it. I imagine he also would have asked you why you didn't notice that the check had Mickey Mouse's signature on it rather than his.

If the money was deposited in the account, you'd have a deposit slip saying it would take 3 days (for example) for the check to clear, on a personal check. My payroll checks were always available immediately. I've never had an instance where a check took 3 days after it cleared to hit my account, personal, payroll or otherwise; 3 days after deposit, maybe. If the check was deposited in my account, 3-5 days later, vendors would be looking to be paid. I know I used to put checks in the mail to pay bills on Monday after pay day.

How long would it take for that one to clear, and the money to be available?

I imagine I'd have told him that I hadn't expected him to be playing sophomoric games with my paycheck.

They really need to stop making pretenses that they care about the public anymore. They need to just be blatant about it and impose their will as they see fit. It will not go over well, but it would be more honest.

That may have actually been the reason it was sent back. I was pretty young when this occured, and it's been a long time since I heard the story so there's probably details I don't recall.

One of the Profs at Cornell signed PhD theses with 'Mickey Mouse".
